HD-DVD now = BetaMax

Give £18 to charity, better use of the money.
#5
I wish I saw this yesterday, as I just bought an xbox 360 HD-DVD drive :(

If you Froogle it, you will see that a number of the drop-shipping IT sellers (ie those who have access to the SAME stocklist) have this for £14-£15.

Then there is a cluster of stores just above £60, with a jump up to £130+ after that.

As for shittoboy's comments, how predictably immature.

Excellent value for a blue diode - these things make awesome laser pointers!

Wow, thanks for that. That's the first I've heard. Does that mean that Blu-Ray won?
;-)

Yea, i saw those 'drop-shippers', none of them have it in stock, and I wouldn't buy from them even if they did :)

Should work in 'Most' Pc's. ATA is another name for IDE, which most DVD drives are. (only very new PC's will have SATA dvd drives, and most motherbords still have IDE conectors (except maybe small form factor dell's ect.)

You will need a 'reasonable' graphics card and a 'reasonable' CPU to decode the video.

If thats the case then do Betamax players play in 1080p and do I need an HDMI cable? :whistling:

That's actually cheaper than getting your BluRay diodes from PSXBOY at the moment, although the BR diode is easier to work with and extract, and you get some nice optical goodies with the sled too.

I'd go for the BR m'self, but if you wanna be fancy...

When did this happen?

....when Sony bribed all of the HD-DVD film studios with hundreds of millions of dollars!
#22
'At War' products always attract these kind of comments unfortunatley.

As the OP said, excellent deal for thos wanting to take advantage of the cheap HD-DVD deals around at the moment.

Unless you PC is brand new, it will work fine. There are 2 connections IDE and SATA. If in doubt look up you PC on the net and see if it has IDE slots.

I found I had to overclock my mediacentre from 1.86 -> 2.4 GHz to get it to play 1080p smoothly..

thanks for the help...

yeah i recently bought a dvd drive and im 99% sure it was ATA/IDE so that should be ok. My pc is a dell dimension 3100.

The spec is:
Pentium 4 2.8ghz ht processor
1gb ram
PCI Graphics (i cant upgrade) - PowerColor HD 2400Pro 256MB DDR2 64bit PCI

Its not the best lol so im not confident they will play but my graphics card does have a hd decoder if thats any help

it probably wont work but its worth asking!

It Might work. Your graphics card is fine & you can get away with 1GB of ram....
Try this, its a system checker which will tell you ! (you need to run it from the pc you want to test!)

IMO your PC does not meet the requirements to play HD-DVD's. You would need more RAM and a faster processor. Graphics card is fine though since its a low budget one.
#31
He'll be fine, the card offloads 99% of the graphics hit for video, at least with PDVD 7+.

That is assuming he gets it to work properly - ati 2400/2600 are notorious for shockingly bad drivers (I have one).
#32
derrycityboy - more memory would be reocmended.
However the HD 2400 card should do most of the processing of the HD DVD's given you have the atest drivers,.
Theres a long thread on avsforum about these and the HD2600 cards which may give you more info.
#33
Good price - and probably useful for the near future...

but now that BR is champion... HD-DVD are not going to be released...

I don't know how microsoft are going to be using it though?

A quick google gives your dell an extra gig for £18.

Not much use for future releases yes, but you might be able to pick up a lot of cheap HDDVDs on ebay over the next year (especially the 7-disc freebie sets so many people have). Blurays are going to be pretty expensive for a good while yet, so could save a fair bit if you buy lots of em.

I saw they had them mega-cheep too, but they have sold out.

Why would you buy a failed technology?, anyone remember betamax??? lol
#39
Just beware, 15x CD READ and 5x DVD READ I was going to buy one to replace my DVDRW but the speeds would kill me. So bought an XBOX 360 ADD-ON to use an external drive :)

Offer is also available from kikatek!

For high definition movie watching at a low price? Only my opinion but that seemed like a stupid question from you...
