Don't forget quidco if going for this, but it is an older model. EP 35 is £40 more with 7 movies so may be a better choice.

Link please as the EP35 is £90 more on play.com and only has 2 movies free...

I think Seancampbell means the EP30.....and the price on Amazon should be taken with a pinch of salt - its an independent supplier.

I'd be interested if it was hackable for standard DVDs as I'm looking for a good dvd upscaler but need it to be region free.
#5
As far as I know there is no hack available for this machine , probably why it is getting cheaper & cheaper .
#6
Although the EP30 is the newer one, the EP10 is better build overall

a) better display
b) beter remote control
c) better workmanship (metal not plastic case)
d) s-video out
e) can be made partly multiregion

See for comparison:

just let my brother know aout this, not for hd-dvd but for a cheap upscaling hdmi dvd player.

but for me this seems another nal in the coffin of hd-dvd
#11
Nice find, ill stick with the PS3 for now though :)
#13
tempting to buy this as backup and spave dvd player. no play discount codes on the go, 5 or 10% off would maybe tip it?
#14
No point buying this if you already have an upscale dvd player seeing as the HD will be totally useless if blu-ray has won , not into out of date products personally

Ahh shame..... if there was a glimmer of hope of a come back i may have brought it...not going to buy it now then as already have an upscale player

Voted hot - Cheers!

Just ordered one of these..

I wanted one of these prior to buying my Samsung 1080i upscaling DVD player as at that time this Tosh model was too expensive, at this price its a steal even if as others state "HD is dead" who cares.. it upscales to 1080p (Full HD) which will do nicely for me! Also a good partner to my Toshiba Regza LCD TV as well.

Just waiting to see if Play honour the order as it does seem a little to good to be true!

HDDVD is dead as a dodo, but there are lots of discs out there, and they're going to be available on ebay really cheap.

If you don't already have a quality DVD upscaler, this is really terrific at that - at this price it's a steal for that purpose. The HDDVD is a bonus.
#21
you can download firmware for this to make it multi-region for sd dvds. I know as I have done it

if you can buy the

HD-E1

this can be made region free

EP10 can easily be made multi-region.

Have a look here

My XE1 was made multi-region in a similar way via a modded firmware :whistling:

As there is a lot of statements in this thread, some right, some wrong lets just clear up a few things ;-).

The following Tosh HD-DVD's that are commonly still available new can be made multi-region for SD-DVD via the use of an easily obtained custom firmware CD for the specific model.

HD-E1
HD-E10
HD-XE1

The HD-E30 and HD-E35 have multi-region hacked firmware but I have not seen this available as downloadable images yet (I know it exists, I got my parents a cheap E30 pre-flashed with the multi-region firmware). Give it a few weeks and I am sure everybody will be flashing these.

A number of other Tosh players can also be hacked but they are much less common in this fair isle.

Once applied the hacks on most Tosh HD-DVD players work in the same way.
They set the players region to 0 (i.e. all) so for most disks it is just insert and play.
For disks that explicitly check the region after getting 0 from the player (So called RCE) there is additional hack.

Try and play DVD. If it fails with a message about the region...

Open the tray
On the remote press T.Search, 1, 3, 9, Region, T.Search.
Player should beep and "TEST" will be displayed on the LCD
Press Play and watch the film.

Region is 1 for USA, 2 for Europe etc. etc. - There are only a very small number of disks outside the US that ever used RCE so for 99.9% of DVD's it would just be Open, T.Search, 1, 3, 9, 1, T.Search.

All the PAL territory Tosh HD-DVD's can upscale both PAL and NTSC content so you can use it as an DVD upscaller.

Upscaled quality for SD-DVD's will of course depend on the player your using (HD-E30, not great, HD-E10/E35, reasonable, HD-XE1, top quality :-D).

Note: When flashing firmware there is always a risk and complications can arise. Consider that before flashing your player and of course, don't blame me ;-).

blah blah blah, is anyone else sick of hearing this?

Its still great value for money.

No. I find his rantings quite hilarious. Its pretty obvious what a good deal this is,hence the fact it has sold out.

There are some stonking HD-DVD deals out there now. Just purchased Planet Earth series for £14 reduced from over £35. Worth buying the HD player just to enjoy all the deals for the next 6 months.

Very pleased that my post has generated so much interest. Good luck to those of you, like me, who managed to grab a really great deal.
#33
Worth a punt - out of stock so doubt they'll restock but 59.99 if it comes through for a hackable dvd upscaler is worth it. Plus it'll match my Regza and I was looking at the sony DVD-upscaler for £90!
#34
my Tv already has a good upscaler i dont know why people buy a dvd upscaler IF the got a good brand ed tv which has a decent upscaler on it. People who think i am talkin **** then think what you wont but the truth some tv upscaler do a better job thn the dvd player. i have a sony tv and no need for upscaler dvd. my dvd is hooked via RGB as well and i know for a fact if buy dvd upscaler it wont be any better. lcd tv have upscaler but some do a rubbish job of it and thats why they buy dvd upscalerhttp://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=20955903

My EP30 is made of metal, I should know, I put a big bloody scratch in the top...it's all shiny underneath. The only bit that isn't metal in the front.
#36
Would have liked one of these as backup for my EP30, damn too slow. Can't believe i missed it!

Have just purchased Toshiba HD-EP10 from Play.com and was wondering where you purchased Planet Earth series for £14.00p? as I would be interested in purchasing same.
