lol, i loved betamax

yep, this will be sub £100 soon as HDDVD stockists start to worry about offloading HD hardware stock. A price point of £99.99 is going to be toooo tempting for a lot a people despite BR winning the format war.
#8
Isn't HD DVD dead or on the verge of, and Blu-Ray taking charge?? Was this not announced just before CES in Vegas? :?
#9
desperate move by HD-DVD.... the end is in sight......
#10
Ah like rats bailing from a sinking ship!

Get them gone before they are stuck with them!
#11
Yes!!! Hence the drop in price.

#13
OK now this is actually quite tempting, Sparky needs to exercise some self-discipline.
#14
If only the price was this low a year ago..........

Great deal, but cheap dual format HD/BR players will be available soon.
#15
im still waiting - i think lol although 7 free HD-DVDs is tempting.

I heard blu-ray is dead, the studios are gonna drop the format cos they think sony sucks and the ps3 is ugly..... just what i heard!!

The 7 free dvd offer is only valid for dvd players bought on or before 31st january so worth taking that into consideration if tempted by the free dvds. I personally think that they will drop further after 31st jan as they will no longer come with 7 free dvds and if you bought one from amazon then you can get the difference back if the price drops within 30 days. So, say if you bought it just before the end of the offer and get your free dvds, with amazon you can still take advantage of a price drop within 30 days which will surely happen as less people will want them when they dont come with the free dvds

lol.... yeah all the major studios are now with HD-DVD... arent they? Hehe :whistling:

This just too boring for words. As soon as the HD-DVD bargain gets posted, a bunch of idiots post drivel about Betamax, the"war" being over, Blu-Ray rules the world etc. etc.

If you haven't got anything to say relating to the deal, why bother posting at all:?

Read 'em and weap fanboys! :whistling:

But you know... Betamax is worth more now ;)

Might as well buy a laser disc too while you're there. They can keep each other company in the loft after six months.

Good price though and the Bourne Ultimatum is quality on DVD so should be amazing on HD-DVD.

HD DVD does appear to be struggling
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/21/hd_dvd_sales_slump/

but - with 7 free disks just look at it as 17 quid a film and a free player !
#23
If everyones buying a HD DVD Player because they're so cheap then everyon is going to have a HD DVD player. Therefore how can the 'war' be over?

Because soon there won't be any new HDDVD films to accompany them

... but £17 a film is quite a lot when you look at the selection you have to choose from...

I think that HD DVD will be a good option for anyone who can get a player cheap and can then collect the discs as they also fall in price. Blu-Ray will be the future, but this could be a good way to pass the time until Blu-Ray prices drop.

The prices of these are going to drop massively after the free DVD offer runs out.
I'm waiting for the EP35 to drop a bit more. Hopefully while I can still claim 5 free HDDVDs.
#27
I wonder if this player is worth buying simply as an upscaler of regular DVDs to 1080p? Reviews look fantastic.

I would think it would. Have you read the reviews on play.com about it as well as amazon? I cant wait for mine to arrive
suspended#29
upscaling on this isnt that great, the ep35 does a much better job shaiya.

Nice price for this, the pricedrop to £150 was rubbish i knew they would lower it to £120/130 within 1 month. This is actually a very nice price indeed:)

EP35 is £189.99 now on play.com and amazon.co.uk
#30
Stock clearance here we go.. dual format players are not going to be cheap or widely available. It's a great price but do you really want something that will have no content in a few months time?

Definitely!

Shame it's actually The Bourne Supremacy bundled with the player. :whistling:

I watched transformers on this model last night and I was amazed how good it looked.
I also have a panasonic upscailing dvd and it blew that away.
It also depends on the quality of the dvd itself. some dvds look worse when being upscailed.
#33
The EP35 has the same upscaler. The difference is in the audio and true colour via hdmi.

Not all major studios are on Blu Ray and if the price of HD DVD disks fall as well we may see a completely different picture. Blu Ray is winning but the war is not over just yet.

P.S. Just before you call me a fan boy I have both.

lol, thanks for the info. I have a ps3 already but didnt stop me going for this deal.
Been wanting a HD DVD player since they came out. Ive still got my first ever dvd player which i bought when they very first came on the market - for £479.99!!!

That sounds like rubbish, the fact is that HD-DVD is now only supported by 2 studios and they must be thinking about jumping ship also. This is a good deal though and I'll have one when they go under £100, and they will.

You think thats a lot, well it is... but my mum and dad bought a VHS machine back when they came out for £550!! You had to pay extra for a wired remote control that trailed across the living room floor!

Ah but by then they wont come with the 7 free movies. The Free movies are surely worth paying £20 more for arent they? Or am i deluded???

The cheapest HD hdvds ive seen are £10 and which would make the 7 worth at a minimum £70

I doubt that, there's no point now that 70% of all films are Blu Ray exclusive with the other 30% soon to follow. The market will be 100% Blu Ray by 2009.

Soon to follow? both Universal and Paramount have confirmed they plan to stay exclusive to HD DVD, between the two that's alot of major films that wont make it to blu-ray. Or do you know something that Universal and Paramount don't lol?

Luckily Play.com are collecting and refunding me for the EP-30 I got before Xmas which cost me £179.99 (after £10 off code) so I can order another one from Amazon. Can I still send off for the 5 free HD-DVDs as they relate to another machine with a difference serial number?

Thanks.
