Might be a good price, but HD DVD is no longer being manufactured so destined for a slow lingering death as per Betamax

Surely its best avoided or am I missing something?

You certainly are

The fact this is HD-DVD is irrelevant. It is a great player which will upscale all your old DVD's and also play all the HD-DVD that are out and coming out. They might not be coming out for much longer but for the upscaling alone this is a good player at a good price.
SHouldn't be overlooked just because its HD-DVD.

all the idiots ( some already ) will be posting on here saying the usual piffle , if u dont want to buy it dont buy it , its a great deal as you get 2 FREE HD DVDS in the box as well and guess what it will still continue to play standard DVDs and CDs for many years to come

longterm mate i think you have a valid point but
i would say the point you are missing is
a high end branded dvd 1080p upscaler for this price alone is great value
but to be able to play hd dvds is a bonus
and then in a few months time prices will drop on the films on the market to about £5
cant really go wrong really
been reading up on some of the blu ray player available
and the some of the first players will be obsolete a
by the end of the year when the 2.0 profile discs are released
the older players wont play them
and some are still selling for over £200.00
but its up to you what you buy as its your money
i want a cheap upscaling dvd player to go with my new 1080p philips ambilight tv
so im gonna go with the hd dvd for now till the prices drop on the blu ray

People are acting as if HD-DVDs are just going to implode any minute. A cheap HD-DVD player is a good thing to have because all HD-DVDs will be in bargain bins soon. HD-DVD is just as good quality as Blu-ray and at the moment the menu's are better (until Blu-ray gets the new platforms going).

So if you want a HD library then get a HD-DVD player on the cheap, get all the bargain films, then get the others on blu-ray. Besides must-haves like transformers are only on HD-DVD at the moment, would imagine that will be one of the first to be moved onto Blu-ray though.
#7
Yep - got one and it's well worth the money even just for upscaling SD discs.
#8
Ibood had the same player a few nights ago, but £74 delivered with 9 free HD-DVDs! Unfortunately, when one of my friends tried tried posting the offer here tho the mods took it down.
This is still a good offer tho, as ibood sold out, and cant find anywhere you can actually get it cheaper at the moment.

The movies are 300 and Bourne Supremacy, both great in HD.

i thought about getting a hd-dvd player to replace my upscaler and so i can take advantage of the hopefully soon-to-be-cheap hd-dvds. one thing that worries me is what happens in 2 years or 3 years time when my hd-dvd player breaks and i cant buy a replacement- i'm stuck with a load of hd-dvds and no player!

You're better off buying from Amazon:-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-HD-EP30-Player-1080P-Full/dp/B000W4EB22/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1203879797&sr=8-1

If the price goes down again in the next 30 days you can claim the difference back as a refund ! :whistling:

The old players will still play the 2.0 profile discs, just not all of the special features, and some can be upgraded.

.... what happens in 2 years or 3 years time when my hd-dvd player breaks and i cant buy a replacement?

Just buy 2 now!!!
Possibly in a few years time HD players will also play HD-DVD aswell as BR, a bit like how current SD DVD players will also play VCD, CD, SVCD, Divx etc etc?

Go & buy a Blu-Ray player, they'll be cheaper by then. But at least you know you've been watching your DVDs on a decent piece of kit up until then. I'm also sure Toshiba have said they'll continue to service them aswell

For those who are not interested in building a library of HD-DVD, but want a good upscaling DVD player, for a few pounds more, you could buy the Pioneer DV 400 which upscales to 1080p and has a USB input to to watch films or listen to music from.

Haven't you heard of ebay? You could still buy a Betamax Video if you wanted on there along films and blank tes to go with it. No doubt there will be HD DVD players being sold on ebay for many years to come.

If you want to discuss the demise of HDDVD, do it in the Misc forum where there is already a thread. The OP has already pointed this out - any further comments are unnecessary. If you wish to spoil this thread like every other HDDVD thread, then your posts are likely to be removed by the mods who have already given warnings in the previous threads about "trolling".

Back to this deal - Amazon one is better as mentioned due to the price difference refund......

Sorry, this one is cold.

Cheaper deal already posted with 9 HD-DVDs included.

No doubt there will be more to follow.

dont think so blu ray technology is completely different to hd dvd plus i cant see the attraction of paying to licence a technology thats no longer supported

still a good deal for a branded upscaler
#32
put the money towards a PS3!!!

now they are divx players too.

its not a completely different form of technology, both are the same just a different way of reading data off a disc.

the main difference being that blu-ray sounds cooler!!

Buy a spare machine. If you hang on a little bit, they'll come down in price a bit more.

Even if you don't, they'll always be a few on Ebay if and when something goes wrong with your machine.

Well, vcd is completely different to dvd which is completely different to divx - doesn't mean it's impossible to have a multi-format player; it's the same with a HD-DVD and BR dual format player, it doesn't stop it from being a POSSIBILITY as there's already one company, LG i think, that makes a dual format player - so why not more companies adopting it in the future?... unless of course you've seen the future and dual format players by other brands is a total impossiblity?
