It's the "digital switchover" in our region next month, and this looks to be the best value Freeview HD recorder as it is a good brand and has decent-ish reviews (apparently the picture quality is fantastic, but channels take a few seconds to change annoying some users). £179.99 delivered. 3.53% Topcashback too.

A 5-year service plan covering "breakdown, failure or mishap" is £59.99 extra, which at a third of the device price is too expensive in my opinion, but may suit those who want peace of mind.

If anyone knows any better deals than this, please reply in the comments below or post them to this site. I expect the Humax and Sony devices are a bit better, but they are £100 more.

I'd use two - one to my main TV and one cable running into the kitchen for a second TV.

Have they updated the firmware yet? Had one at Christmas and it crashed and was very slow to change channels - sent it back and got another Humax HDR FOX-T2.

This is the same price from amazon, might get one of these instead of
paying £300 for the Panasonic dmr-xw380(250gb)from argos clearance.
Very impressed with the quality of the two Toshiba HD Dvd players I have got.
some very good reviews for it on the amazon site particularily the first one.

Yes, it's the same price on Amazon but you can get £6-odd Topcashback from Laskys.

Nearly every Amazon review mentions the slow channel changing (even the 5* ones strangely) - I couldn't live with it personally.

That looks a good deal, but I haven't heard of DigitalStream and I can't see any reviews for that one so it's a bit risky.

I know the Humax is the best one to get, but the cheapest I can find it for is £275.

Buy it from John Lewis. If it doesn't meet your expectations, return it for refund. No risk.

Thanks. I think I'll leave it three weeks and wait to see if better offers come around before our switchover. Currently I'd say the best deal for the Humax is at Richer Sounds for £307.94 with a 5-year "supercare" warranty. It's a lot to pay, but at least I'd know I would get 5 years + service from it.

There may be another deal like this http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/humax-hdr-fox-t2-freeview-hd-pvr-500gb-249-99-best-buy/936056 if you wait a while. John Lewis will price-match such deals, provided the competitor has retail outlets, & you get a 2 Year Warranty.
