processor is pants but the rest looks good!

Go to a shop and have a look at the L300 series laptop before you buy. I was going to buy one but decided against it because of the flimsy housing, especially the top. People have lots of problems with screen breaking because of the weak lid. A cracked screen is not covered under warranty. I went for a stronger Compaq instead.

as above i expect better spec for that money, let me go look for better laptop.
tosh slightly cheaper with only 1gb ram http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164881 or this one with faster cpu http://www.buyitdirect.co.uk/Toshiba_Satellite_Pro_L300-1FK_Laptop_with_2GB_RAM_PSLB9E-02U003EN2GB/version.asp
acer little bit extra than topic laptop with larger hard drive and faster cpu http://www.ebuyer.com/product/160831
hp 2ghz celeron 1gb ram £279 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159081
Dell Vostro A860 Celeron 560 2.13GHz 1GB 160GB £291.12 http://www.dabs.com/products/dell-vostro-a860-celeron-560-2-13ghz-1gb-160gb-dvd---rw-15-6-wxga-vista-home-5HVJ.html
these are quite low spec laptops, i would consider these for light usage. out of the above i have listed the dell and acer seem to be better value. ok cant find anymore for now since most laptops at this price are sluggish.

battery life is worse than the toshiba only 2 hours, and only 1gb ram for the same price. the cpu is faster 2.1ghz sempron compared to 1.66ghz celeron and the compaq has a better resolution screen. Even tho it is a 2.1ghz sempron is a fairly slow 2.1ghz cpu. I reckon the compaq is a weee bit better. All of these laptops will struggle with vista installed.

I would disagree that the Celerons quoted here are faster as they are single core, this T1600 is dual core. The acer looks good for the money though.

Voted cold, purely because of the processor

I've bought the Compaq CQ60 from Comet for £319 with 3GB Ram. (use code 3150AW exp. on 31/07)
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/526711/COMPAQ-CQ60-307EA-SA

This model is very sturdy, has several "hidden" advantages:
- dedicated Number Keypad (most other notebooks have it integrated)
- 15.6 screen (wider than most, and it is very good)
- The best Mouse Pad I've ever used
- HDMI out connector
- Webcam
- Lightscribe DVD writer (no need for a separate printer for your CD/DVD labels)
- very sturdy housing
- very quiet in operation (I am noise sensitive)

Vista runs very fast even with Office 2007, Adobe Photoshop and several other application multitasking (because of the 3GB Ram). With Windows XP and Windows 7 it flys away. I recommend not to use the included Norton IS 60-day trial, which slows everything down.

I think all entry notebooks are anout the same in speed. Don't let yourself be carried away with processor speed only. It's all a matter of how the individual component work together, which decides the operation speed. Acer for instance has a horrible bloadware on all their notebook which slows everything down and you can't get rid of it because if you do, you get problems like overheating.

I checked many notebooks for keyboad, mouse pad, housing, etc. and the Compag came out best. Toshiba L300 series has worst housing and is only good if you operate it in a fixed place and don't carry it around much, becuse it will break (screen). .

Hope this helps someone decide.

If you want speed, don't use Acer with horrible bloatware (which has to be used if you want no overheating).

Dell outlet would be a good alternative for higher spec for less money?

Probably not less money but probably higher spec (and wait for delivery). I have no experience with Dell Refurbs but from anywhere else, I would only buy new (don't purchase from DGS, their refurbs are all faulty).

I didn't want to wait and needed my notebook right away (old one broke down over the w/e), so local shop was my only option.

I don't think it's reasonable to vote cold just because of the Celeron processor. Nothing at all wrong with these dual core Celerons in entry level laptops. However it is a fairly standard price for this type of laptop.
