Unbeatable deal for someone looking for a half decent 'everyday' laptop.

Good spot. Won't last long at this price.

Just wish I had a more secure job or I'd have gone for it myself before telling everyone :p

Cheap, but ideal for most basic computer tasks.

An alternative very similar spec for same price from Ebuyer ->http://www.ebuyer.com/product/237715

EDIT: CPUs surprsingly similar
Celeron Dual-Core T3500 @ 2.10GHz benchmark 1475 rank(lower is better) 447
Intel Core2 Duo T6570 @ 2.10GHz 1352 482

Similar, but I reckon the Core 2 Duo CPU of the Toshiba blows the Celeron Dual Core out of the water (_;)

Can't go wrong at £260, have some heat
#7
Damn that's tempting. Only 2GB of RAM though.

Think its good but there are better deals as will spend £30 to put the RAM up and then there are deals with dedicated graphics etc.

Not cold, but would personally spend £60 and get a first gen i3

I agree, the i3 is quite an amazing CPU. Even the non-mobile version works well in a laptop, and it has a lot of power.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/medion-akoya-17-blu-ray-laptop-now-down-291-delivered/938368

CPU: Intel® Pentium® processor T3400
Hard disk capacity: 320 GB
Screen size: 43,2 cm (17")
NVIDIA® GeForce 9500M G 512 MB GDDR3 RAM
Blu-ray drive, Multi-Standard DVD/CD burner
All for less than £30 more :)

Graphics rated 166th here, I have the 1 place lower 8600m gs and have to say it isnt sluggish, not going to play modern stuff full res but a bit of sim city etc it wont mind. However a damned sight faster than the 4500MHD

Processor rated 163rd here also. So a bit slower than this one by 13 places but in the real world you wont notice.

At the end of the day if you can get round the Brand snobbery of the Toshiba the Medion seems a very good buy. Plus from my experience of Toshiba low end machines in recent years I have to admit they are not all that great, the mid range and above is where toshiba pulls it's own.

So the message is....those that want to play Sim City (how old?) should go for the one in your link? Fair enough. Oh, and it also has Vista going against it too...never mind :(

Also worth considering that the Toshiba, although has 2gb Memory, it is the faster and cheaper to upgrade DDR3

as far as I know the DDR3 1333Mhz will downclock to 1066Mhz.

Sim city probably not the best comparison. However gaming of a the more basic variety will be a lot smoother on the Medion. Try running fear or anything more taxing on the integrated crap in the Toshiba and you will go mad.

As for the ram, 2gb is only a matter of £2-3 between the two types and at the end of the day I really doubt any real world advantages would be seen at this end of the computing spectrum between DDR2 or DDR3.

As for Vista, yes it isn't very good but at the end of the day it's a means to an end and if fully up to date with windows update is just fine.

Just to hype this up a bit more... it has Windows 7 Professional. Also, if you're worried about reliability get a cheap warranty extension from Toshiba ->

RAM options from Crucial (will refund if it doesn't work)
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Satellite%20Pro%20L450-17Q&Cat=RAM
(DDR3 RAM (1,066 MHz) is best match)

Not a bad laptops but for some reason the HDD or mobo on medions c***-up, had 2 friends with them and both had the same problem - powers up occasionally and about 1 min after os boots up, the whole thing just freezes.
I had a gander, swapped out ram, hdd, checked connections and all seemed fine but the fan stops spinning, sending the cpu haywire and even with a replacement fan, same happens. Reckon they over-heat and mobo gets faulty tbh.
Would go for the Tosh for reliability and it being a well know brand (bar the components inside, probably the same as anything else out there for this price range).
Just my tupence, both are great laptops but obviously personal experience is a big factor in buying anything.
