1000:1 contrast ratio....is that right...lowest ive ever seen :(

This is a pretty old TV now. Not a good deal compared to the Sony at Richer Sounds or even the LG at Comet/Currys.

Good price but very bad contrast ratio. Worst i've seen. I've got 32 inch Tosh with 20000:1 ratio and excellent picture quality. I would not personally buy this or recommend it. If you are gona spend your hard earned cash then might as well buy a better one.

The 42X3030D also employs a dynamic backlight, so the intensity of the backlight will adjust depending on the scene being watched – during darker scenes the backlight will be turned down to help produce more convincing blacks. The dynamic backlight allows Toshiba to quote a dynamic contrast ratio of 6000:1

Didn't get a bad review here either.

I have this TV. The contrast is about as good as any Sammy/Sony of the TVs age out there. The stats from the makers of the different sets mean nothing. Good blacks and a nice sharp picture.

I'm pretty sure my TV has a contrast ratio worse than that. I think it's 700:1 or 400:1, but I can't see the problem.

I sell TV's for a living and have one of these in 37", its a Which best buy and the quality of the standard definition is up there with the current Sony's and better than the current ranges of Toshiba's, LG's or Samsungs. Contrast ratio isn't as good as LG's and Samsungs but isn't bad.

How much of a visible difference does contrast ratio actually play?

That's not a "real" figure though, it's fudged by using dynamic back lighting. LCD panels are simply incapable of delivering that kind of contrast at the moment.

comet have a nice 40" 1080p lcd for £499 well they did a few days ago also as a pakage with a nice stand and the tosh super upscalling dvd player for £599. if i was to be getting an lcd around this size this is what i would get.

I agree.

My Tv is exactly the same contrast ratio and gives lovely blacks, too much reliance is put on the contrast ratio, nothing like customer reviews imho

Very old model and was £499 from play a few weeks ago

toshiba tvs are awful. Spend a bit extra on a nice panasonic, the king of plasma and also pretty darn good at lcd too.
