This seems to me to be a reasonable price for a good quality laptop. The price includes delivery, a 2 year guarantee and 90 days telephone support. Its from John Lewis so the customer service should be excellent if anything does go wrong. JL don't do Quidco.

Downsides are the hard disk is a little small at 160GB and it only has Vista Basic, so you won't get a free upgrade to Windows 7. However, from July 15th, you can preorder Windows 7 for £50 if thats important for you.

play.com have a similar model with a 1 year guarantee for £400. At pcworld.co.uk its £450 with a 1 year guarantee (also with 4GB memory and Vista Home Premium)

I was looking at PC laptops last night and to be honest as a longtime mac user I'm not too up to date with PC specs. Anyway, I did spot this http://www.cdiscount.co.uk/Computing/laptops/laptopsbysize/from15to16/toshiba-satellite-l300-1g8-laptop/f-1077-184006.html at cdiscount which appears to be the same spec but comes with 4gb ram and Vista premium for £359.99. Am I missing something in the specs? I believe there's quidco & plenty of vouchers to be had at cdiscount as well as the 3 monthly payment scheme too.

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place!

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/427673/toshiba-satellite-l300-1g8-laptop-3/ is a thread about that deal

A 32 bit operating system will only be able to use 3GB of the 4GB memory. cdiscount pay 5% through www.quidco.com. I think the cdiscount model will also be free to upgrade to Windows 7. The downsides are that its a 1 year warranty. The reviews on cdiscount at http://www.ciao.co.uk/Reviews/Cdiscount_co_uk__7043745 are rather polarised between people giving 5 stars or one star. If anything goes wrong, then I'm sure that John Lewis would be better. The question then is how much more it is worthwhile paying for that.

This article http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/images/en/Windows7/images/windows7_E_toshiba_upgrade_models.pdf gives the details of which models can be upgraded to Windows 7 for free. For a Satelite L300, the part number needs to start with PSLB8E.

http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Satellite-L300-1G8/1066120/toshibaShop/true/ gives a part number of PSLB8E-06R007EN for a Satellite L300-1G8 (although it also quotes the screen as being 17 inches across)

In the end I went for a Dell Outlet 1545 for £264 including delivery. It is scratched or marked, has Vista Home Premium, with a free Windows 7 upgrade, 3GB RAM, 160GB disk and a 2GHz T4200 processor. The warranty is only 1 year return to base, though.

I'd rather for the same price have a better processor, HD graphics card, 'n' Wi-Fi, larger screen and keyboard as with this Acer.

Would be just about OK but it's Vista Home Basic only. So, no free upgrade to Windows 7.
