I won't post benchmarks as everyone knows they are misleading but if you absolutely can, try a computer running an AMD E-450 for a while to see if you can deal with it day-to-day. A low-end Core i3 (first-gen even) or Celeron will be faster.
Not being a mac is a reason for heat.
Id seriously think about saving a little extra and getting an i3 from dell outley for £80 more as these are very underpowered even for uni.
