Was helping a mate look for a decent laptop, and found this at a brilliant price for the spec!

Toshiba Satellite P500-1DX 18.4-inch notebook (Intel Core i5-430M, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, DVD SuperMulti Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium)

Whilst the Nvidia GT310 isn't much for gaming, the rest of the laptop's specs more than make up for it at this price-point.

Note, this is a larger than average laptop, and more suited to a desktop replacement than an on the go type affair.

Only 1,680 x 945 resolution which for 18.4 inch screen isn't that great. Otherwise seems to be a nice laptop.
#2
Resolution is pretty much standard for screen sizes up to 20", 1080p only really comes in to play from 22" and upwards.

It's £20 more expensive and has a 17.3" screen rather than an 18.4" one, but I think this new Dell XPS 17 is the better overall deal...

Performance wise, the new i3-370M is on a par with the year old i5-430M and the brand new Nvidia 435M knocks the old (and useless) 310M into a cocked hat. Plus you get USB 3.0.

Also 1GB less RAM, but you are right, for the £20 it is a better deal, for the graphics card alone.

Still voting this deal hot as if you're not into gaming and don't want to output 3D and really want the larger screen or a full-size keyboard it's a good deal.

they forget a blu ray? with this screen it must be!

You can pick up at 2GB DDR3 module from EBuyer for £29.99 if you're worried about the 'missing' GB of RAM but I doubt if you would notice it. I upped the RAM in my old HP laptop from 2GB to 4 GB and it was a complete waste of money!

Depends on what you are doing - Windows 7 will only need around 1GB hence 2GB is the recommended minimum; but I think if you are manipulating large graphics files / lots of photos then 3-4Gb would be useful...

Yes it's one of those three :)

It really does depend on what you want from your laptop...

I liked the dell XPS one that had a better graphics chip, and it was only 500 quid :/

can't find anything like that now, shame i missed it as i was quite interested.. anybody know of a similar spec/price? or better?
#12
Its ok, but for that kind of money, you'd expect better graphics, and a blu-ray drive.
#13
I fancy a laptop that can manipulate 3D as in use it to do 3D Modelling. Do you think the Dell would be useful for that? Also some video editing? I'm a novice when it comes to laptops.

That's Desktop panels, laptop panels can be 1920x1200 in 15" sizes, the laptop I'm posting on is.

1680x945 is crap for such a big screen
