What do "those in the know" think of this laptop?
#2
Seems good spec for the price but this computer's screen can be very fragile
#3
sorry I am not a pro, just rather advanced user but imo the laptop is a good one, you will not get better for similar price. If I was on £300 laptop, I would go for it.
#4
Good spec - good price.

But I would recommend going for a Vista Home PREMIUM unit, rather than BASIC - which this ships with.

Voted hot all the same as for the spec it is a respectable deal.
#7
BAttery life 3.2 hrs. Is that poor?

uness it's a dell
#9
Good good PC for the price (although no Dell in terms of processor power).

It gets HOT from me :)
#10
What makes the dell vostro a better deal than this? Is it?
#11
dell is better

Screen is TRU BRITE! which is a bonus.

If you need a laptop wait for he Quadcore to come out on the laptop, which wont be long because ive seen DESKTOPS using quadcore technology.

Quad core would just eat the battery life, probably not a good idea unless it was a destop replacement.

Good price for Toshiba though (although no wireless)
#15
The Toshiba has got Wireless,

This laptop is essentially the same as the Dell minus the CPU that is slightly is slower here

Toshiba
Core 2 Duo 1.6Ghz + 1 Mb Cache
Dell
Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz + 2 Mb Cache

That's the only difference and the casing and branding of course, appart from that they are pretty much the same!
#16
The Toshiba's CPU isn't Core 2 Duo its Core duo, so not as efficient clock for clock and has a slower FSB.

Its a later Core Duo though that does have 64bit support unlike the T2130.
#17
I think you are mistaken mate :

From Intel's website:
spec Number: SLA4K
CPU Speed: 1.60 GHz
PCG:
Bus Speed: 533 MHz
Bus/Core Ratio: 12
L2 Cache Size: 1 MB
L2 Cache Speed: 1.6 GHz
Dual Core
Enhanced Intel Speedstep® Technology
Intel® EM64T 1
Execute Disable Bit 2
#18
So the dells a better deal then. Thanks
#19
Don't know which to go for now..

This Toshiba is definately Dual Core like the Dell.

I am leaning toward the Toshiba as it seems like a better make.

Am I right? Or is Dell still better?
#20
The Dell is the same as this bar the processor, which is BETTER (not by a lot, but better).

I personally would go for the Dell, but from tomorrow onwards this becomes a really good deal (as the Dell one is running out in a few minutes!!!!) So hurry up!
#21
Dell better than Toshiba?!?!?!

Dell offer great value for money, but let's not pretend they are up with Toshiba mobile computers when it comes to build quality.

I would put Toshiba behind Levono (formerly IBM) thinkpads but ahead of Dell when it comes to quality.

Good price. Voted Hot.
#22
Blimey, that's an absolute belterr of a deal
#23
There's something about the Dell Vostro that looks more sturdy/better built than THIS Toshiba.

For example, the lid looks quite flimsy on this Tosh.
#24
As an laptop repair engineer who has repaired both Dell and Toshiba laptops, I would definately recommend Toshiba every time. A friend of mine bought one of these a couple of months ago and is very happy with it.

The only drawback is is has Vista installed, I would recommend to anyone they wipe Vista off and install XP, if you want the pretty looks of Vista without it's drawbacks, get yourself a Vista skin:roll:
#25
Far better quality than Dell Vostro. I order a Vostro last week and wish I hadn't.
#26
the vostro does not have s-video, but this toshiba does. Also who would the warranty be with? Amazon or toshiba? If something went wrong, would the company take the laptop or would you have to send it yourself?

Well said.
Toshiba I have found to be better built than many other LT's I have had or used, where as the Dells, I have found to be a little flimisier - Dont get me wrong they are still good for the price.

On these spec laptops though, I second the motion of getting rid of Vista and putting XP on. VIsta hogs the system resources and will not run well (cricky - it didn't run all that well on my desktop and that has some serious power..... Went back to XP)

Good spec - good price.

Or if you want to retain your sanity, install XP as there's still so much which doesn't work properly with Vista..

Can't argue with that, IBM/Lenovo are miles ahead of everyone else when it comes to build quality, Toshiba are next with Dell a way behind.

I personally would never buy a Dell, has anyone here actually tried to contact and have a conversation with Dell Customer Service to have a concern resolved, my advice is don't waste your time .....
#30
great deal i was going to buy this off ebuyer but they had run out .
#31
Hot Hot Hot! Swings and roundabouts on whether this or the Dell is "better". Build on the cheap Dell lappies can be a bit creaky but both a bargain.
#32
There are a few drawbacks on this toshiba:-

1. The 2gb memory is two sticks rather than a single module
2. The processor is slightly slower than the vostro
3. The battery lasts 3.2hrs whereas dell lasts 4+ hours
4. There are no options to upgrade it, whereas dell allows you to upgrade some components, such as gfx card, etc

Mistaken about what? The T2330 is a Core Duo, not a Core 2 Duo, its still a dual core, it just uses the older architecute.
#34
watch oot PC geeks aboot:w00t:
#35
It uses the same architecture, it's like with the E21xx series for Desktop that are now called Pentium Dual Core instead of Core 2 Duos, when in reality they are just rebadged Core 2 Duos!

Just had a look and you're right, they're both Merom-2M cores, but the t2330 has a slower FSB and half the cache. :whistling:

Intels naming system is horrible, the t2130 is a core duo 32bit only, whereas the t2330 is C2D.
#37
the price is now £345
#38
Its now up to £345.00

Don't you just love the Dell Groupies?

Anyone in the trade who has managed, installed, repaired, upgraded very large numbers desktops & lappies for any considerable time (Esp. heavy duty users or business) knows that Tosh's are a country mile ahead of "Bit's swept up off the warehouse floor" Dell's, their failure rates aren't in the same league and their QA is also in a different class.

For cheap & cheerful home users fine, Dell "Slabs" are fine, not great, but fine, Lappies however are more fragile anyway, some makes are more fragile than others, Tosh's being one of the few exceptions to the rule.

Is that why this tosh feels a bit cheap???
