Hi there
Ive had a look round and i think there is a few hacks for this player.
It depends on which chip it has.

Try the hack listed by the poster above but if it does not work try these

1) Connect to TV
2) Power on DVD
3) Enter 7777 using remote
4) Use on-screen menu to change region code (region code 0 = region-code free)
5) Power off DVD

The DVD is now region code free.

To determine chipset:
- Power On Player without disk in tray
- "No Disc" Message appears
- Press 000
- A Message showing Chipset ZRXX966 (Zoran Vaddis 9-66),
manufacturer (TSB) and RC (02) should appear

If this doesn't work, you may have a different chipset or at least chipset version and hack may or may not work for you...

The Hack Procedure:
- Power On
- Open Tray
- Press 9879 0 (0 stands for Multiregion, you may press buttons 1 to 6 to choose a specific region)
- A Message appears stating that "The Reg.No was changed to: [insert whatever region (0-6) you selected here]"

That's all, now you can watch every DVD you please... :)

Additional Information:
To get further info on your player do the following:
- Power On
- Open Tray
- Press 966
- This should show a screen listing RC, Firmware- and OS-Version, Manufacturer Label, etc.
Hope this helps

As an alternative, I got a sumvision recently (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139176) for a similar price (without voucher), which has HDMI and upscaling (not sure if the Toshiba does)

H&R added thou, especially for voucher price
banned#6
seems pricey to me for a non hdmi, non upscaler.

£18.31 - £2.40 quidco == £15.91 for a branded DivX DVD player with USB port. Seems a steal to me. Ordered. Heated. Repped. And totally paid for by this month's quidco cashback, I might add.

Hottity hot, thanks.
#8
Wish it had upscaling. Would go perfectly with my Toshiba LCD wth the Regzas and the 1080Ps :-(
#9
All good, ordered.
Perfect timing - my old one broke down this morning :-D

H&R Op - cheeers

for the price and make this is a great deal, have just ordered one.

I bought the sumvision from ebuyer last month but am not impressed with it, picture grainy on dvdrip avi's
#11
why have a cheap upscaling dvd player for you big expensive plasma/ lcd ?? surely they have upscaling abilities built in than work better.

bought the ASDA Onn item late 2008 with upscaling, USB & divx for around same money.
quite happy to sacrifice the upscaling for a respected brand name item with good reputation.
definitely hot, and would suggest certainly not overpriced for the facilities less upscaling.
#13
hotter than hot, ordered yesterday at 16.00, came today at 10.00, played 2 films with usb, works perfectly and quickly, fast forward works with divx, and the first multi region code worked for me as well, all for £18, cracking deal

I desperately tried to get the ONN brand one when it was listed here, but my local store just didn't have any in, so this'll be just the dab!

Great player, arrived today, solid builld, with my only gripe being the remote control is quite small and the keys are dinky.

However on the plus side, it works with everything thrown at it. Wouldn't work with an external 2.5" Bus Powered USB Hard drive, but spot with an 8GB USB stick.
Heat given, great deal

Can this play .srt / .sub subtitle files with divx?

If you look at the Toshiba web page in "Features"...
http://www.home-entertainment.toshiba.co.uk/DVD-Players-Recorders-Upscaling/DVD-Players/SD-290-DVD-Player/?showBy=size
.... it lists HDMI

HDMI

#28
hot, wanted a decent divx player for a while, particularly with USB.
#29
ordered; very good deal!
#30
is this usb 1.1 or usb 2. Does it stream divx files ok from a uxb stick or hd?
#31
thanks OP. HOT find!!
#32
Code isn't working.
#33
Received mine this week. Works great. Doesn't play absolutely everything that I put onto it, but it's not too bad. Works fine with my 500GB Lacie external HDD, which is formatted to FAT32. If your USB device is FAT32 then it'll work, but if it's NTFS, then it won't since Microsoft own NTFS and any device which reads it is required to pay a whopping license fee to MS. Therefore, most don't. Most devices can be partitioned using partition magic to include a FAT32 partition though.

Great little player and amazing value for this price. There's a little bit of noise over RCA, but I expect that component would remove this; I just don't have a spare component cable kicking around.

HOT!

is this usb 1.1 or usb 2.

It doesn't make any difference - even it's just USB 1.1 then all your USB 2.0 devices will still work with it.

Yep.

Exactly.
Unless your telly has a crappy scaler inside, then an in-player scaler is not a desireable feature ! By using it, you are bypassing the better scaler inside your telly.

Wish it had upscaling. Would go perfectly with my Toshiba LCD wth the Regzas and the 1080Ps :-(

See above.
Your Regza set already has a decent scaler inside - you don't want to bypass it with a cheap in-player scaler !
#35
brilliant just ordered one...this will save me a load of divx cds...burn a divx onto mu 8gb usb and watch it that way...:thumbsup..
#36
Checked specs elsewhere and it DOES NOT have USB !!!

I ordered this dvd player a few days ago and when it came it was all black. To my eyes the top of the dvd player looked silver and it was required to match other silver audio/tv items. It is very small and light too but good value if all black is ok.

Ordered - what a steal!
