Oh dear god, why am I even bothering to post this...

Saw a poster outside Game this morning saying you could trade in your used PS3 Slim 250GB for a brand new XBox 360 Super Elite 250GB in a straight-up swap.

I post this for information only, I accept no responsibility for any of the following comments...

That's what I was thinking. I have both but the PS3 gets more usage. I usually play the 360 more out of sympathy to justify the purchase. :-D

No, but a new one does, hence RRP. The deal is asking you to swap something that you had paid more for. I thought it was quite obvious really :whistling:
banned#22
To be fair, it is a second hand console for a new one, which isnt bad, and depending on how long the offer is for, if you were pondering between the two this gives you the chance to "sample" a PS3 and swap it for an xbox for free if you don't like it.

an old style Ps3 that will be out of warranty (1 year warranty, yellow light of death etc £130 to repair) for a console that you get 3 years (redlights etc only & then £60 to replace).

Fact Microsoft owned up about their problems

Fact Sony says 'small' no.s of machines ahve problems afetr insisting that people had tampered with machines & watchdog fixed 15 of them outside Sonys offices in protest (9 of which still broke down later on)

Fact Activision was considering dropping game release from the Ps3 due to low game sales compared to other formats if Sony didnt price drop their console before they announced the slim.

Fact Bill Gates donated 90% of his wealth to charitys to aid Cancer, Aids etc etc

Swap your Ps3 for the 360 then go get a (more reliable????) slim Ps3 or a cheap Blu ray player.

I have both, both are good. Sonys reputation however shoddy with their lack of addmitance.
I have a 360 that died twice & replaced twice, just got a new one so I know I have 3 more years of bliss & sold the old one. My Ps3 is a 80gb & when it goes....Its gone. simples.

i recall when the ps3 slim came out, game were offering you one if you traded in your regular ps3 plus something like 100 pounds - what on earth would be the point?

Profit.

There is (currently) a worldwide shortage of PS3 consoles. Once all the (existing) new PS3 slim models have sold (at somewhere near Sony's Recommended Retail Price) GAME can charge anything they like for the used ones... until the revised slim (reduced power consumption) models are available.

if i was thinking of selling my ps3 slim id take up this offer, but only as i would get more money from selling a brand new xbox 360. but thats prob only reason id trade my ps3 slim for a 360 as allready own an elite haha

I work in a gamestore that used to specialise in repairs, we tallied phone calls for 3 red lights, e74 etc for the 360 vs a tallie of Ps3 yellow lights, control boards etc for FOUR MONTHS
the 360 was way in the lead for faults for the 1st month, after 2 months Ps3....after the 4 months Ps3.

you beleive the fiction :) most surveys are made up.

The slim 250gb has only been out for 6 months tops - this deal doesn't apply to any of the "phat" or 120gb slim model by the looks of things, and if it did, I'd be buying a cheap 40/80gb machine and taking full advantage of the deal!

Some people just like to have the shiny new version of their console, but for us it was a god-send as our 80gb was starting to have issues, meaning we paid about £50 to exchange it for a brand new machine with years warranty!

It is almost 8 months (come the first week in May 2010), but yes, I spotted that sentence & chose to ignore it (as I was giving the potential troll the benefit of the doubt that it was just a statement not meant in relation to this deal).

Did you look at the NoFussReview results of a survey of 500,000 owners in relation to console failures?

(I'm trying to remain impartial by not stating the console with the highest failure rate).

For me, the main reason was the DTS HD over HDMI. I love to see the little red light on my amp light up. Plus, it also had a bundled DS3 controller, not to mention the bigger HDD. I also liked the smaller size and quieter operation.

When I put it like that, why did I change my phat for a slim

I didn't trade it in, I simply sold it and put the cash towards the slim
#34
Had a look through the available games for the 360 and for the PS3 and, for me anyway, the 360 wins hands down. Far more games I'd want to actually play on that console than the PS3 - and I don't own either.

Might well buy myself a 360 now though.

The slim also offers a reduced number of USB ports (compared to the original 60Gb "Phat" PS3 consoles), but a gain in power consumption figures, and... I know I'm going to regret mentioning it... loss of "Other OS" support.

As I hinted above, the new slim model will reduce overall power output even more & the currently available slim model(s) will be less attractive by the time they reach the market (here in the UK).

There really isn't a better time to trade-in your PS3 slim to gain an Xbox 360 (250Gb) Super Elite as you will be losing tens of pounds on your purchase price, if that.

If the mood takes you, sample what the Xbox 360 has to offer & if it is not for you, wait until the PlayStation Move is released & buy a newly released (revised) PS3 slim with a "Move" bundle.

GAME may well be offering part-exchange deals in reverse by then.

[ You can always trade the new PS3 slim model back again for a slimline Xbox 360 with a "Natal" bundle at the end of the year! ;) ]

That is the only way to look at the choice if you do not mind about HD-DVD versus Blu-ray Disc support, availability of Sky TV versus BBC iPlayer, &/or 3D gaming, Spotify, Facebook, Last.fm, &/or Netflix functions.

Just buy a console based on the games you like to play. After the first few days when the new device has blended into the background under your TV you'll not care what the badge says anyway.

I work in a game shop, we tallied for 4 months the Number fo faults between both consoles for Four months, the xbox was the most faulty month 1, month 2 Ps3, Month 3 Ps3....Month4 Ps3

todays tallie, equaled 1 Ps3 yellow lights (60gb old skool) & 1 Xbox 360 redlights (not jasper).

250gb Ps3 that in 6 months you may have to pay £130 for a xbox you will not for 3 years.

what was the old addage of how many surveys are made up? 500,000 imaginary people are still imaginary people

if were talking reliability the wii wins lol
but you would have to be mad to swap a Ps3 for a Wii...imho not so for a 360.

I'm not aware of the adage you quoted, but your single branch is not indicative of worldwide failure rates.

Do you also record statistics on how many failed consoles were not brought into your store, but were sold or disposed of by the owners?

Plus, saying one console fails more often in one month does not show a trend. It does not show anything without actual quantities month on month, or quantifying percentages of consoles returned against those sold.

Also, do you know if all the consoles received into stock were sold by your branch, or bought from eBay (for example) with a known fault, and when they were originally purchased?

I suspect not, but please furnish us with your comprehensive statistics if you wish to. I am genuinely interested.

PS. If you are a GAME employee (rather than somebody who works in "a game shop" [lower case 'game']) perhaps you would be kind enough to make a comment within this thread I created:

GAME sells ex-display stock as 'new' - Will refund or replace any non-'mint' goods bought at Easter

Thanks.

Free online gameplay, bluray and not having something sounding like a jet plane wins it for the PS3.

Does anyone have statistics of comparative ownership in the UK over the last couple of years?

One of my release day 60Gb PS3 consoles is very noisy and, although there will always be free online gaming for the PS3 (well, for the foreseeable future), later this year you will hear of fee-associated subscription services from Sony in up to five different tiers of features/functionality.

Both of my Wii console get incredibly hot after only an hour; hot enough to burn your hand on the top of the casing.

My other "Phat" PS3 (Limited 160Gb) consoles run very quietly for about 2 to 2.5 hours, but then the fans kick in for up to five minutes at a time.

My Xbox 360 250Gb Super Elite is very quiet in comparison (but it is the most recently purchased).
