What difference does class rating make? ( sorry if stupid question)

Perfectly valid question!

The speed and performance is the main difference, as anything Class 6 or over is more for High speed Digital SLR (RAW) or HD Video use - the reading and writing to and from is faster.

Below is the classification:
* SDHC Class 2: 2 MB/sec (16 Mbit/sec)
* SDHC Class 4: 4 MB/sec (32 Mbit/sec)
* SDHC Class 6: 6 MB/sec (48 Mbit/sec)
* SDHC Class 10: 10 MB/sec (80 Mbit/sec)

Although Transcend say this on their website:
"Adhering to the new Class 10 specification, Transcend’s SDHC cards perform at a transfer rate up to 20MB/s on devices supporting SD 3.0, ensuring your device remains quick and responsive while recording and viewing files."

See http://www.buzzle.com/articles/sdhc-card-class-difference.html

No probs! I got the Samsung 16GB's from play.com last time round (though only Class 6), but same price hence this is a bargain!

I guess it's not getting enough hot votes! ... there's so many SD card deals on at the mo... you think they are trying to get rid of them to make way for SDXC cards or something! :3

How would these compare to the Samasung's? Apparently these aren't as fast as they say they are...

I'd say they "should" be faster as the "Classing" is fairly strict I think, but have a read of these reviews to see real life test results. I'll need to wait for my order to arrive till I can do some tests myself!

Yes, looks like your camera can take SDHC and normal SD cards - go for it quick!

Good choice, I used to have that model too! It will work fine with 8GB (probably 16GB too).

I have a D90 now...just eats memory up!

Pretty sure that it will, your camera does use SD cards and it is HCSD compatable which means it should cope with a card up to 32gb

[quote=sds1493] ... as the "Classing" is fairly strict I think ...

Now that's very funny - if there is one thing that is downright dishonest it's the Class rating for SD cards! It's just a marketing gimmick.

The SD Speed Class Ratings specify a MINIMUM sustained write speed for SD cards (Class 2: 2 MB/s; Class 4: 4 MB/s; Class 6: 6 MB/s; Class 10: 10 MB/s; Class 16: 16 MB/s) and that means nothing - since some Class 4 cards actually deliver better write performance than some Class 6 or even Class 10 products!

There's a lot of rebranding going on by SD card vendors. Panasonic now has a range of Class 10 SDHC memory cards. On closer inspection, it turns out that they are, in fact, Class 6 cards that meet the requirements of the Class 10 category. In other words, they ensure a minimum write speed of 10 MB/s, as most SDHC cards already do. Tests here ...

http://www.digitalversus.com/panasonic-sdhc-4-gb-class-10-p388_7897_60.html

confirm that the new Panasonic Class 10 memory card is just a renamed version of their existing Class 6 card. The cards writing data transfer speed just managed to scrape through into the Class 10 category at 11.7 MB/s.
#30
@grumyone - tbh I couldn't agree more... Sandisk have a Class 6 and Class 10 Extreme 30MB/s card - almost identical to each other, but the Class 10 just scraps it!

Back to the deal - the Transcend card scores very highly in the same review site.. if we see some Class 10 Pani deals are posted here, it will be met with ice for sure!
#31
bout this for a £1 more over the weekend.. at mymemory.. :)
#32
very good deal - fluctuates around the £11/£12 mark at Amazon via mymemory etc.
thanks op

Its likely that it won't read SDHC and just reads SD cards. You will need something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Integral-USB-Single-Slot-Reader/dp/B000VY80AM/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285692234&sr=8-1

Yes that camera takes XD and SDHC cards so both the 8gb and 16gb should work.
