Good price, heat added.
Totally agree with your view of Halfords, but Carrera are pretty decent bikes and get lots of good independent reviews. Now if you had said Apollo...........

I agree that Carrera aren't Apollo but I was aiming at a bike of similar price. The closest is their Carrera Centos: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_840925_langId_-1_categoryId_165499#tab2 ( brought out for the Olympics :p ) for £329 and they are pretty similar although the Trek has slightly better brakes and a better rear mech.
So i'd go for the Trek, £14 less, and slightly better. Although this is irrelevant unless you live in Leeds as Chevin don't deliver :(

But thanks for proving my point and linking to a bike of the same price point of the same quality.
Now this is a real deal for less...

Isn't the Rockrider only 26" wheels? This Trek has 29"

From the specs on the link you posted:
Weight 14.2kg in size S, without pedals
Weight 14.200 kg for size L, without pedals
So what is the true weight ?

Why compare a hybrid\road bike to a mountain bike?
It is a 29er.
This means that you have 29 inch wheels instead of the normal 26 inch wheels.
Both the Rockrider and the Merida have only 26 inch wheels.
The whole feel and ride of a 29er is very different to a standard Mountain bike.
It is like comparing a Mountain bike to a Hybrid as the difference is that great.
I personally have a 29er and you can not in any way compare it to a standard 26" version.
If you are talking weight you need to take into account that there is more bike with this and that when you yurn one revolution of the wheel you will go further so the old how heavy is the bike garb does not compare.
I would suggest to anyone thinking about a new mountain bike to give a 29er a go.
They are massive in the US now and are starting to take off over here.
When you ride one you will know why.
For £315 this is by far and away the BEST 29er out there based on build and value for money.
I challenge anyone to find a 29er at a cheaper price.
HEAT VERY MUCH ADDED.

i gave an alternative option to those who don't ride in terrain much. on many websites/forums people ask questions what kind of bike to buy, depending on their riding preferences.
