So in layman's terms this basically reduces consumption of your electricity/bill ? Or am I missing something! Does it cause any connectivity/compatability issues etc?

It allows you to physically connect hardware (i.e. laptops, netbooks, desktops, NAS, servers, etc) together via network cabling bypassing wireless and giving you a constant wired connection - it's ideal for those with mixed network devices in place.

Because it's an unmanaged switch it will negotiate the network speeds based upon the cabling type used but also what's been set-up on the physical network devices as well.

It will add a bit more onto your electrical bill especially if your running it 24/7. :D

I was considering purchasing that but I'm worried about the amount of devices that I have in total and the types, laptop, pc, nas, iphone, TV and worried about possible data collisions. But if you believe that I should still be okay with the other one I would purchase that.

I can vouch for the TPLink model, but one other thing to consider is 5 ports is not actually all that much. Assuming you hang it off a router, you will "lose" one port on the router and one on the switch when you interconnect them, giving you only an extra 3 net in total (assuming you have a 4 port router).

If you are happy that's enough going forward then fine, otherwise maybe worth looking at an 8 port. That way you should be able to have all your devices connected to the Gigabit switch to communicate with each other at high speed, and just use the router as an internet gateway and wireless access point (most routers are still 10/100 on the LAN side).

Just received the TP link yesterday from Amazon and so far,so good.£13.89

I have the 5 port TP-Link model and it works perfectly, on my network I can get 60 MegaBytes/s (not bits) through it.

Make sure your cabling is good though or it will run at 100 MBits/s. I run a 30m cable to my garage with an ethernet wall socket at each end and had to strip the wires before pushing into the contacts of the ethernet plate in order to get gigabit. My 30m cable that came with std. plugs attached had no issues.

Ok ok, you guys persuaded me.

Thanks , was looking for a good cheap port switch :-)

The TP-Link switch is nice but no jumbo frame support. Will be going for the TrendNet one instead. Thanks OP.
