Description:
-----------------
There's little in Boy, U2's 1980 debut, to suggest that this was a band bent on world domination. Indeed, there's a charming, if naive, coming-of-age urgency in songs such as "I Will Follow", "Stories for Boys" and "Out of Control" that may startle listeners more familiar with U2's latter-day bombast and stadium-scale theatrics. Bono's viewpoint, still tantalisingly vague and wide-eyed, showed that his penchant for strident polemics hadn't yet gotten the best of him; his anthems are those of a yearning Dubliner barely out of his teens rather than those of a world-weary multimillionaire. The band's sometimes-ragged musical chops work in its favour here, gently burnished to then-fresh new-wave sheen by producer Steve Lillywhite. If the Edge's dense, effects-laden guitar work seems overly familiar, it's only because this album was such a key influence on the whole "rock of the 80s" sound. Though not quite as moody or musically accomplished as October, arguably the band's first masterpiece, Boy still ranks as one of U2's best albums.

Great album.

A classic - so much better to hear them when they were fresh, starting out, with something to say and a lot to prove than some of their latest self-indulgent stuff.

But does the remaster make much difference for those of us with the original CD?

Depending on my mood I'm torn between that and Achtung Baby.

Hot deal, still a great band but their best work is behind them. Haters gonna hate though.

No. they're not!! Garbage have a female singer and look much different to U2!! ;-)

At their best earlier in their career to be fair.... and for £2.99 BOY is a bargain!!

Come to think of it, I've never seen Bono or Shirley Manson in the same room....

Along with their album October this is probably their best as they sound raw and uncommercial.I was one of the lucky ones who saw them in concert at the Lyceum in London during the late 70's when they were at their best.

Hey are't you all cool dudes, you all just love to hate us, and you even cooler dudes who loved us before we were big! Look we've made a couple of uncool albums over the years but we are still the kings of rock n roll and always will be!

There is, of course, the faintest possibility that some people exist who prefer the earlier albums, rather than saying it to be cool.
