Damn gutted I missed this! Emailed the vendor and they said this price was a Panasonic special promotion and is no longer available :( If anyone knows a way to get the same price please share!
Just wanted to say thanks for posting this! I did the same price match through John Lewis which went through fine. First prime lens, still learning how to use it effectively, main difference I noticed is the increased depth of field compared to the kit lens.
Has anyone experience of the new 25mm 1.7 ?? ~£150!
If you want to get really close (wildlife shots) then the Panasonic 100-300 is also great. Bit more expensive, though.
thanks vclaw, will take a look at those, thanks for the help!

For this money I'd expect a full frame sensor, it's 2016..

And lug 1kilo lenses around? No thanks. The m43 sensor is perfect compromise between image quality and protability.

£649 for a 'camera' that you can't take photos with as it doesn't even have a lease? Yeah right.
Many cameras are sold without lenses.

Price isn't spectacular (available elsewhere for £599 without the hassle of cashback), but still.... your comment is stupid, and you should feel stupid.
On a more useful note - anyone considering this should go in a store and handle it first (true of any camera, but especially here) - I was shocked how chunky it is compared to the GX7. Hoping they slim down a bit for the next model.
£599 (with no cashback) would be for a Grey Import with no UK Manufacturer Warranty or support I guess? Or do you have a link?
Apologies, you're right, was looking at a grey import without realising (although wrong to say no warranty / support, international warranty, which is better than nothing, though obviously not as good as a proper UK one).
No problem baz. I thought this was a good price esp with the 5 warranty. Seems a very capable camera.

as a long time photographer, I would say that for most people this is the best camera for your money. You could buy a cracking dslr/slt at this price but not a decent set of lenses, it almost certainly is not as portable. the RX100 series is the best compact you can get for your money.

I picked up a Sony A5100 the other night when it was on a lightening deal with Amazon. Would I have been better to go with the RX100 just to capture family snaps and videos? The A5100 seems to have a faster autofocus and was looking to add the 35 and 50 Sony primes.
Stick with what you’ve got. The A5100 is ideal for your intended usage. It’s small, almost pocketable (on my similar-sized NEX3n I took the strap off, put a wrist strap on one of the lugs, and it fits in a big coat pocket). Your A5100 has very good video capabilities also (and has clean hdmi out and XAVC codec, so that’s something to envy for owners of the NEX3n like mine, which doesn’t have those things). You’ve got a much bigger sensor than the RX100, and therefore to get such a wide aperture the lenses will be correspondingly bigger, but the PZ 16-50mm that comes with your kit is not too bad in terms of size / aperture / distortion / resolving power. Yours is a good camera, just as this one is also a good camera. Yours has a bigger battery, so more shooting. Stick with what you’ve got.

main benefit is the focus speed really... apparently rx100IV is pretty fast as well though

you are going to be spending a fair bit more on the other lenses ~4-500

i find i fairly often use longer zoom with my kids than the 50mm would allow which isn't an option with rx100

Seems like they just cut the US price by $300 - hopefully this'll be reflected in the UK soon!
I think the price at UK Digital reflects the fall in US so don't expect to see much lower in UK until the cash back offer ends.

If you're ok with a refurb, they're £650 from here https://outlet.sony.co.uk/shop/Digital-Cameras/RX-Series/DSCRX10.CEH.A
Good £75 saving if you don't mind a refurb. As it comes with a 12 month warranty should be OK.

I was going to go for the sony 3N, however it proves difficult to hold due to its size and not touch screen I believe, nether the less they all ok. Arrived well packaged and everything new, no damages to box etc.. And the guy at the end of the phone was good, chat to him about some advantages and disadvantages of the mirror-less camera , they seem to know their stuff and not just push sale to u as they are family run business.
robo989
Pretty good price...but be careful with the fluctuation of camera prices, what is a fantastic deal today, could be a pretty poor one in a months time.
G6 prices have shot up (as was pointed out in last deal for one here) and G5 body can be had for under £200 a month ago...don't know current prices now, the lens can be sold for approx £50-£55 or if it's the MKII one then maybe £60-£65.

Yep your right, that's why I had a budget to work from. But no one can predict when to buy or not, so I guess, if u need it buy it if not then don't. That's my motto
5 years warranty - hot
This upgrade will be a vast improvement on a G1 - I upgraded from a G2 and noticed a huge difference. Low light performance is now excellent - regularly shoot at 6400 iso with very little graininess. Plus you can use any lenses you already have.
D4VPC
How does this compare to the g1? Worth upgrading?

Not really, all cameras in the "G" line perform on a similar plane.
You'll need to spend a lot more money to get anything that will show a worthwhile improvement in terms of low light performance, which is the weakness of m43 cameras and G series especially.

Why do I still look around after ordering?
Canon 1100D looks to get better reviews, oh well.

But the Canon is bigger, especially the lenses, and has no rotating screen, no touch screen and no EVF which is great for video shooting in sunlight. Rest easy you have made a good choice! Remember more Canon fanboys out there so will always get better reviews.

I went to Thailand with my 5n this year and it could not have been brighter out in the sun but I still managed to take good photos. But it's harder with manual focus then. Or a bit impossible.
royals

Also you are reliant on a screen which is hopeless in bright sunlight or even worse on a ski slope

Because of the excellent flip-up screen most of my pictures are taken at waist hight on my NEX-5n which eliminates the sun glare problem completely and also affords greater stability than holding at arms length.
Royals, I concur. There are defo trade offs.
Still...this a great camera...if want good pics that are far far better than a compact point and shoot but dont want the bulk or cost of a dslr then this us for you

Despite my comments i use my nex3 more than my dslr at the mo...its a compromise
Inertia true but you may lose autofocus and is by putting those lens on..maybe an issue for some

Achilles heel of ccs is that you arent looking down the lens

Also you are reliant on a screen which is hopeless in bright sunlight or even worse on a ski slope

Hi, I ordered this on Wednesday from UK digital, within 5 minutes they'd emailed me the Sony cashback claim form, within 20 mins they'd sent me shipping info. Camera arrived yesterday (I paid for next day delivery), well packaged and perfect. All in all a great consumer experience, would definitely recommend.
Worth noting that the retailer sells via amazon, when asking amazon to price match, I clicked on other sellers of the product and UK digital were there with high positive retailer scores.
yeah they are selling it for more via amazon strangely - mine 'should' come monday.

I am pretty sold on getting one, to be honest and am thinking about the £449 package which is the SEL 1855mm and SEL 16F28mm Lens rather than the £589 package which is the SEL 18-55mm and SEL 55-210mm Lens. Is this clicking when in filming mode all but fixed now?
-BA-
Still thinking about treating myself for my birthday and wondering if I should go for the double lens kit for £449. Is the pancake lens quite handy to have? I am not very clued up on zooms either and have a bridge camera at present with a 20x optical. I realise that these kind of lenses are very different but if someone could give me an idea of what lens is equivalent to a 20x optical so that I have some kind of reference to go from. Is the 18-55 similar or would I need the 55-210 kit?

Totally agree with Toaster the 18-200 Sony lens is good but too expensive, there's an excellent Tamron 18-200 which is a little cheaper and lighter but seriously unless you need a huge telephoto forget the bridge camera, comparing image quality between the bridge and the NEX is like night and day. Any image from the next will be far far better. The NEX series really are as good as any sub £1K DSLR. Better if you get a high end lens... The handling takes some getting used to but once you know what you're doing you'll struggle to get a less than superb image.
I like the 16mm (pancake) with the NEX 5N, (as the camera has the ability to corner correct and remove chromatic problems that the lens is notorious for) it also makes the camera very compact, and would definitely pay the extra for both lenses. Even if you don't like it you can eBay it for £100ish so it's worth the extra. I really wish I had the 16mm again, it's great for landscapes.

You wont get anywhere near a 20x zoom range lens for a NEX body, the 18-55 is a 3x zoom and the 55-210 is 3.8x zoom. The best you can do is the Sony 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS which is an 11x zoom but costs £600 and is huge.
A compact like the Panasonic DMC-TZ30 has a zoom range of 20x (35mm equivalent of 24mm-480mm)

Cameras like the Nex-5 are about having larger sensors with small bodies to give high image quality (especially in low light) in a compact package, but are not about the huge zoom range and convenience that bridge cameras offer. I wouldn't rush into buying one until you really know what it is that you require in a camera.

Many thanks for the response it does help me to get a better idea of things. What is the pancake lens like? Is it a pretty good general lens to use when out and about rather than the longer lens?

Still thinking about treating myself for my birthday and wondering if I should go for the double lens kit for £449. Is the pancake lens quite handy to have? I am not very clued up on zooms either and have a bridge camera at present with a 20x optical. I realise that these kind of lenses are very different but if someone could give me an idea of what lens is equivalent to a 20x optical so that I have some kind of reference to go from. Is the 18-55 similar or would I need the 55-210 kit?

Fuji X-S1 bridge camera with 5 year warranty @ UK digital for £486.95

Edit: please don't vote cold because there are other cameras out there that have similar zoom and resolution for cheaper. This camera is in a league of its own. Bigger sensor, metal lens barrel, etc.

£449.99 here direct from Fuji, if you don't mind a refurb. Still has 12 month warranty and in my experience, Fuji Shop refurbs are as good as new. Still a good price for brand new though.
I've got one and it does the job well. Very heavy though! and this is a decent price compared to elsewhere.
I nearly went for one of these but decided for the money the sensor was just too small. However it is a very good price for the model. Heat added.
You're not going to get a bigger sensor with this zoom range for this price anywhere else though
2/3" is still tiddly though.

Just ordered one through Amazon.
True HotBot, but the Sony is very close though.
Beaten by the Panasonic FZ150 in most comparisons.
Also the FZ150 has a hot shoe for external flash allowing more flexible bounce flash photography.
Same price as Amazon UK but without the 5 year FREE warranty
Same in Amazon.

Panasonic GF3X with X Vario PZ 14-42mm OIS lens - £376.95 - £326.95 after cash back! @ UK Digital

This one is for those who appreciate a compact quality optically stabilised and video optimised zoom lens. Maybe £127 more than the other current GF3 offers but the lens is worth £320 on its own!

damn, wish I hadnt seen this deal - now I'm seriously thinking of buying one!
to OP: Would you say the GF3X is pocketable? it seems very small but probably still wouldn't fit into a jacket pocket:|
Here is a size comparison for those interested between this camera and others.

Any suggestions for a case to hold just the camera itself? My wife is looking for something to keep it in and offer a little protection while in her bag so just a soft case that would be just big enough to fit the camera in would be ideal. Any advice or pointers would be appreciated.

I have the Lowepro Apex 60 AW and it fits the camera with the compact x lens (or 20mm pancake) just fine. I doubt you can get any smaller!

Sorry to disagree but I think the Jimmy Bo 200 is (much) too big if all you want to do is keep the camera with the collapsible lens in there. I have it, and the GF3 (admittedly with the pancake lens) and just tried it to make sure and there's a lot of wasted space. I can even fit a GH1 (same size as a G2) with a pancake lens, or the GF3 with the normal 14-42 zoom in it.

I like Crumpler bags (I have 4) but the material isn't very flexible so it can't really be squashed down either.

Unfortunately I haven't got an alternative suggestion, yet, but I thought I'd give you a heads up

Agreed, it would suite the standard zoom better. I also agree that the material is quite stiff which is a good thing when you need your camera protected.

same price in Tesco basically, and you can collect from Store
£364.80 at Amazon but get £30 Amazon Credit back so that sort of works out cheaper.
Plus £7.95 delivery?
Seems the cheapest at the moment with the extra Lightroom pack and 5 yrs warranty.
PhilK
Scratching my head wondering WHY this is a "good deal" ????

I'm going to throw this crazy idea out there, but maybe cheapest price?

Olympus E-PL1 on amazon for £350 (after cashback). Not much bigger but much better camera and you can change lenses.

The E-PL1 is a lot bigger - especially if you attach the cheap & nasty Olympus collapsible zoom lens. The S95 is truly pocket size. Ultimate picture quality is the main issue - though I'd say in 95% of cases, it's good enough.
