In the six-part British "vampire-slaying" mini-series Ultraviolet we discover that UV light is used (both in surgery and via high-tech weaponry) to identify people who have been infected with a disease labelled "Code 5". It's transmitted via a bite to the neck, but at no point in the series is the word "vampire" used. Instead, in the second episode ("In Nomine Patris") the nickname "Leech" is introduced. We learn that it was this disease, these "Leeches", that were responsible for the Fire of London, and that one in 20 people are already infected. In the opening episode, policeman Michael Colefield (Jack Davenport) is recruited into the secretive CIB. He meets its introverted priest-chief Pearse (Philip Quast), the emotionally driven Dr Angela March (Susannah Harker) and the bullish heavyweight Vaughan (Idris Elba). Spinning around Mike's suddenly complicated life are his best friend's jilted fiancée Kirstie (Colette Brown) and old flame Frances (Fiona Dolman). In later hard-hitting episodes we see a 12-year-old boy stab his teacher priest to death ("Mea Culpa") and the capture of a "Leech" ("Persona Non Grata"). This intriguing series ends having tied together most of its threads, but dangles worrying implications at the viewer... not so much to suggest a sequel as to hammer home everything at stake.

I remember this, I recall it was quite a good show. :)

P.S> Voted hot and bought it.
cool just ordered it. the show IIRC was a channel4 late night jobbie. it was repeated last year on scifi i think. thanks to the OP
I already own this, great show. Voted hot :)
Ordered via Quidco (6%). Thanks
Quality Sci Fi drama - great price for a classic
Never heard of it...how old is the series? What channel broadcast it? Sounds alright...
This was a really good programme, well worth getting. Shame they didn't make any more.
Think it came out in 2000, as earlier post said it was shown on channel 4
I loved this series when it was on TV. I remember the plot as being good with twists and betrayals (but don't ask me what it was about beyond the obvious!)
It was "released" on 15 Sept 1998 according to IMDB. I seem to remember it was C4 as well.

Voted hot and bought! Thanks for the deal!
Ordered via Quidco (6%). Thanks

Only 6% for new customers of Sendit though, which is a shame :)
Just to back up what has already been said here..

This is possibly some of the best British drama that there's been in quite some time. Understated throughout, and brilliantly acted and produced, this is MUST SEE television. Quite why C4 haven't repeated it more often is anyone's guess. I'd have thought they'd have punted it on because Jack Davenport was in Pirates 2 (they've used weaker reasons in the past!)...

For those interested, there was talk of a follow-up by way of a US remake.. Which (if stories are to be believed) had car chases and other such things pretty much absent (and unneeded) in the UK original.

By the way - if anyone has this DVD set, could you let me know if your copy has discs 1 and 2 labelled the wrong way round?

voted hot, because its ace. It has been repeated recently on Sci-fi, I think, but is well worth buying. Well acted and well scripted.
I got it with 6% off thru Quidco, as I am a new customer on SendIt :)

:x Aw well, just have to wait for it!
Availability: Usually Despatched within 72 hours

Probably worth ordering then. Having watched it though I think it has one of the most annoying 'endings' of any tv series, barring Angel of course....:x
