"Ulysses, Ulysses, soaring through all the galaxies, in search of Earth, flying into the night! Ulysses, Ulysses, fighting evil and tyranny with all his heart and with all of his might!

Ulysseee-eee-eees, no-one else can do the things you do! Ulysseee-eee-eees, like a bolt of thunder from the blue! Ulysseee-eee-eees, always fighting all the evil forces, bringing peace and justice to all!"

This fantastic Japanese-French co-production was first broadcast in the 80's, on Channel 4. The series is a modern retelling of Homer's 'The Odyssey', set in the 31st century.

Fresh from the battle of Troy, Ulysses journies home to reunite with his wife, Penelope. En route, his son Telemechus is snatched by a mysterious vapour cloud and transported to the White Planet; there, children are sacrificed by the natives to their lord, the Cyclops. Whilst rescuing Telemachus, the Cyclops is destroyed, thus incurring the wrath of Poseidon, the monster's creator.

Zeus - the lord of the Gods - banishes Ulysses to the universe of Olympus, and sends his companions into a deep sleep. Only once he has found the Kingdom of Hades, can he free his crew and return to Earth to be reunited with Penelope once more.

As per the intro, 'until you find the kingdom of hades, your bodies will stay as lifeless as stone'. The last episode is 'The Kingdom of Hades'. Sounds like the complete collection to me :-)

this show was actually first broadcast in the UK on Children's BBC at teatime in the late 1980s (that's where I first remember watching it, anyway). it was later (mid-1990s) repeated on Channel 4 early weekday mornings, on a sort of rotation with jase and the wheeled warriors, which led to many debates at school over which was better :P

anyway, the whole point of this ramble is that children's bbc was where they pointed out the Ulysses/Barry Gibb separated at birth theory, which i think holds far more water than the jesus one...

still a great show, anyway. up there with Mysterious Cities of Gold and Star Fleet in the they-don't-make-them-like-that-anymore stakes.

Great deal. I'm sure I heard that they'd cut the intro or something like that so they can fit all of it on 3 dvds.
#18
Now if only they could get the Mysterious Cities of Gold on DVD.
