I'm talking about the UMD movie format since Sony won't be offering a download exchange goodwill service for this format. :whistling:

It's only dead if you are going to buy the still as unreleased PSP-Go, until that time they will play quite nicely.

i think dead format is becoming my two least favourite words in the english language.

UMD has been written off for 2 years yet a lot of new releases are still brought out, and if you have a psp 2000 or 3000 you can hook them up to the tv and watch them in dvd quality.

so whats all this about not working on the new psp? is this the psp2?

will the new console not have a UMD drive? because if it doesnt i cant see many upgrading.

That's the one!

Just a new version of the PSP, smaller screen and no UMD drive to ensure you PAY for the games.

it's gonna ave a download service instead as it has 16gb(expandable) built in memory. As sony have stated it won't replace the psp 3000 just act as an alternative. So this deal is still hot!

The new PSP isn't replacing the old one so for the foreseeable future, new PSPs will be sold with UMD drives, therefore not a dead format :whistling:

(Unpopular though granted)

i have a psp 2000 and i used to have a 1000 - and ive always paid for my games.

i now this will eliminate piracy totally - but the problem is once you download the game, thats it - you have it for life. you cant sell it, and if you sell your console people wont pay extra for the hundreds of pounds of games downloaded because they may not want them. ive got that problem with my Wii - 25 games downloaded but nobody would buy my wii for £350 will they?

also 16GB internal doesnt seem very big - how many games will fit on that? also there was talk of a goodwill service, so if you have the UMDs of games they let you download them for free. how will this work? what proof is needed you own the game? and i have aroudn 40 PSP games, id wager i wont get half on a 16GB internal memory.

im gonna stick with the 2000. any console that forces you to download games will probably fail.
#14
oh and about being sold alongside the psp 3000 - who with any sense would own BOTH?

what is the PSP Go actually going to give you that the 3000 doesnt?

Isn't it more worthwhile to buy the DVD's and then rip it to the computer and copy to the PSP Memory stick?

BAM!

And there lies the reason UMD never sold well. Especially since shops were selling software to do the task (and labelled as such) alongside the UMDs

Who wanted to pay MORE for a proprietary format they could ONLY play on the PSP. It's lower quality and has no extras and given the PSPs short life the format could never have a good resale value.

These are pretty cheap if they are new films though* :-) (they should have NEVER been anywhere near the price they were, I guess Film Studios just weren't interested otherwise)

*Oh.. which they aren't, sorry just can't see the point then in most of those.
#19
This is the price the film UMD's should have been, why they couldn't see that selling Ghostbusters on UMB for £117.99 when you could buy the DVD for £1.99 was a stupidly bad idea we'll never know.

As for downloading games to the new generation PSP, that would only be usefull if you could back them up so you could DL something else ... as that will be a route into piracy it'll never happen ... which means the new PSP will, IMO, will fail.
#20

IMO The new PSP priced at £229.99 = fail.

#21
£229?!

Definite failure!

Sony are absolute masters at innovation but have shockingly little common sense when it comes to pricing, the PS3 debacle has proven that.

WOW :w00t:

bullcrap.

UMD was never 'dead'. HD-DVD is a DEAD format.

UMD movies were never that popular because the price was higher than a DVD alot of the time. If they came out at £2.99 a pop, then they'd be selling by the bucketload.

If you honestly think UMD is dead, you are proving you know nothing about gaming, because 90% of the PSP games are on UMD and some are available via download as well.

Look at Final Fantasy Crisis Core sales and monster hunter sales etc. UMD is FAR FROM dead, Sony still support them (if you watched e3 you'd know what i mean).

When Final Fantasy Dissidia comes out, UMD sales will shoot up again.

So in conclusion, sure, UMD movie sales were never that hot, but game UMDs have been steady.

Sony putting together \'good will\' program for UMD to PSP Go

A Sony marketing boss has revealed that the company will soon be revealing a 'good will' scheme for those current PSP owners who want their UMD games playable on the new PSP Go. And apparently they will be revealing this all soon.

“We'll be unveiling that soon. We actually think there's a significant group that will be upgrading from the 1000. In the past, we've seen a 20-25 per cent trade-up factor, and I assume that's going to be the case here.

“So we're looking at a good-will program – a short term good-will program that would continue for years afterward
