Hi
I think the £15 gets you 300 mix and match mins and texts...The £5 internet add on,would this get you unlimited mobile internet? This being the case, you could port all your numbers in to your skype account and then use this for free calls,is this correct? Anyone have this phone and can comment? Thanks

You don't need the £5 internet add on for skype calls, skype calls are always free.

i dont think it works with skype-in or skype-out
(i have the original skypephone)

Just got a PAC code from Voda and was about to order a SIM only for £15 a month... This certainly throws a spanner in the works.

I don't know whether to thank you or shout at you... Heheh!

Quoted from the three website

"Introducing the new 3 Skypephone S2

The new 3 Skypephone S2 is the only mobile you'll ever need! Not only does it allow you to check your Facebook, instant message your friends with Windows Live Messenger and surf the web with ease, but it's also a brilliant phone too!

It's got an excellent 3.2 megapixel camera, thumb friendly keys for fast texting and allows easy access to your music. Plus great value calls, texts and internet access.

And don't forget - it's a Skypephone! You can make calls and send messages to anyone, anywhere in the world for free! (As long as they have a Skype ID of course)"

If it's a skype, does that mean it's wifi compatible? Don't know much about Skype. I was under the impression it would need to be connected to a phone line or computer/internet network to access Skype services without being charged...

I think the SonyEricsson looks tempting as well for the same price.
#9
thanks tubby... that means it only works for skype to skype calls.

thunderbolt- skype is nothing to do with wifi. it is a way of making cheap calls over the internet (VOIP)

Need a new mobile,so looking in to this...You need to top up £10 every 3 months (90 days) to get full use of the Skype function. So, £15 a month plus another £40 a year and your rocking! Don't think you can use Skype in,still checking this, which basically means you can get a "home" phone number eg. 0141 557 6757 and give it to people to use to call you...Only found user comments that say you can't,if anyone finds out more, please add,ty.
#11
top-up requirement is only for pay as you go. this is a contract so u cant "top up"
#12
Might be a useful article - seems you can use Skypeout now but only for calls outside the UK.

I found this...!

SkypeIn and SkypeOut workaround
There is a SkypeIn and SkypeOut workaround that Skype and 3 know of, and as yet they have not stated that you are not allowed to use this workaround.

What the workaround does, you need two accounts, one for you 3skypephone and the other for your computer (Windows only). The account on the Windows based computer must have credit or one of the Skype unlimited Subscriptions - so that you get a SkypeIn number too. You download the workaround program from http://code.google.com/p/skypephonemanager/ and for more information http://leon.mvps.org/SkypePhone/ [see http://3skypephone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=642 for others talking about the program] and unzip it then edit the settings in the file, this will link your Skype account on the 3skypephone to the one that has credit or the sub.

I'm slightly confused about what people want from this phone and also about what most understand by the usefulness of skype. I'm not trying to be snooty though...so please...

You can use this phone to call other people with 3 Skype phones or people with Skype on their PCs/Macs - for free. No wifi or any other fiddly things to consider, just have a skype account and login through your phone. It's just a program I believe, (which comes preinstalled and pre integrated)

Other people with 3 skype phones or PCs/Macs with skype can call you - for free.

My only concern is...does the program always have to be active in the background for you to receive these skype calls or is it *always on* if you catch my drift?

Here's the FAQ from the Skype website regarding the 3 Skype phone from three.

from my experience with the old one it is always on.
it is only a background process on eg nokia phones running the app.

you just have to sign in once and it remembers as soon as you power it up.
the only down side is 3 coverage which is slowly improving.

Then that really is quite amazing:thumbsup:

I can imagine young couples who used to have to worry about minutes and such can now talk for as long as they want.
#17
thats why they also sell them in pairs on PAYG
sound quality is a bit crackly, but good enough. i think they have a fair usage policy?
#18
Lol, had to look a bit for that
4,000 minutes a month.
http://www.three.co.uk/personal/customer_/terms_conditions.omp?cid=1190901758177

But the cool thing is you can still receive skype calls...so, if you exceed 4,000 minutes - which would seem rather an amazing feat in itself - just get the other person to call you and use their 4,000 minutes up.

Oh and a little aside, three are crazy/insane.

You get:
300 anytime minutes/300 texts - a mix of the two.
300 minutes three to three calls.
And 4,000 skype to skype minutes per month
And a free phone! For a 6 month locked in period only!
So that works out at £90

Quidco offer £32.50 for a "mix'n'match 500" contract, and if you have a friend or family member on three already (which I have) you get a £30 "refer a friend" discount on your monthly line rental - so the first two months worth.

So a grand total of £27.50 over 6 months...

I am way confused as to how three make a profit anymore...

You only get refer a friend discount nowadays if you sign up for 18 months. They've sneakily changed it, sadly.

It's still a good deal, regardless. So tempted. I have the 3 mobile broadband dongle, and I'd prefer to use this to wirelessly connect instead.

Need. To. Resist...gah

Does anyone know about using it as a modem? how could you get itwork and how fast the network will be?
Thanks in advance

Saw the pretty lady and just had to reply, lol.
it's 3.6 mbps (HDSPA or some other 5 letter acronym), you use the USB cable that comes with the phone and attach ala wifi dongle (ala meaning "like a", not that it becomes one).
You use the software that three provide you with when you order their mobile broadband or can you download this (?)
My father has the mobile internet dongle thing, doesn't look hard to use.

hot deal, no question

3 declined to give me quidco last time I did this :-(

thanks for your reply. I was told my xps has got a slot my sim card. Can it work if I insert a 3 sim in and purchase the unlimited web browser from them?
#29
technically that should work. bit of a waste tho as you cant use the minutes. u only get 1GB usage
if u sign up for this deal you can add a modem for half price (although 18 month term) £5/month

The best option is the one highlighted above. Get the 6 month contract if you need the phone, and because you're a three customer you're entitled to half-price mobile internet (so from £10 to £5 for 1GB or the better option £15 to £7.50 for 5GB). But you are tied in for a 18month contract for the mobile broadband. - There's no way round that I believe.

interesting!. how about my o2 sim with unlimited web browsing? I think they use different network to connect to the internet don't they?
#33
Ive got Skype onmy N95 and a sony ericsson have had since early march.

In theory its great.. free unlimited calls, however its unusable. The app needs to be running in the background and it very often crashes the phone, disconnects or is simply unusable.

my personal experience with the above setup is to avoid it like the plague, would be interested to hear what others think who have used it.
#34
as i said before, phones running this as a separate application eg nokia, se, samsung etc will have a background process, so it doesnt work so well.
the skypephone has skype running continuously... always on. it is a bespoke model- hence the name.

So do not compare other phones. 3G is good enough even without HSDPA (3.5G)
#35
Does anyone know - can these S2 SkypePhones be UNLOCKED? if not do you think 3 would unlock them for free after the initial 6 months?

3 never unlock for free, minimum £15 charge

I'm afraid I'm going to have to vote this cold. I have this phone on an 18month contract (so I'd like the phone to last that long) and after 2 months the phone started having problems. The handset switched it's self off when I played games and music and it drops signal all the time. Also the Three network has recently got worse, with more dropped calls than ever. 6 months ago I would've recomended Three to anyone, but now even on a new phone I can't get signal and customer service is awful! The assistants in the shop are useless and the people on the phone are just as bad and told me fiance "Sue us if you like, we're a huge international company, you will lose"! Sorry but please do not get this phone!!!!

I don't think you will get both.... That would be odd. About 4 months ago we got a 6 months contract and a brand new Nokia 6120. We just received £32.50. I don't know if they will grant you £20 or £32.50, but I don't really think both...
#39
mumbojumbo
I downloaded the Skype for Mobile (Beta) application onto an existing SE phone. The sound quality on the test call I made was terrible and didn't inspire me to investigate further, but at least the application works.

I think calls will be better on this device because it is HSDPA enabled (so faster data transfer).

Getting a tad technical, 3 implement the Skype service differently than running a Skype app on a 3G/HSDPA phone as you are.

The way 3 do it is to have Skype servers within their network, so whilst it looks like you're using Skype on your handset, you're actually making/receiving a standard phone call between your handset and the 3 server, and then the 3 server is managing the actual Skype call from the core of their network.

I find running the installed Skype app on my Nokia 6120 works very well, but running a normal Skype application (which then makes it VoIP from the handset) is pretty lousy despite the HDSPA.

Addressing the 3G dongle deal mentioned elsewhere, as I understand it, the 1/2 price deal remains valid where you have a 3 phone deal running in parallel. So if you sign up for this deal for 6 months, and the 3G dongle for 18 months, your 3G dongle contract will revert to full price if you cancel the phone contract.
