Is this signs that petrol will get even cheaper?

Gordon Brown asked for it, hopefully we will get prices tumbling nationwide in the coming days.

At the moment prices fluctuate all around the country, some areas of the UK are still selling at 120.9 but if we get what Gordon Brown is asking for then prices will be fairly similar across the land under a pound in the coming days / weeks?

Does anyone remember the prices about a year or 2 ago? it was like 79.9 and back then we used to always moan about how expensive petrol was... lol. just imagine if petrol EVER dropped to that price again, do u think we would still moan after we have been paying up to 120.9 for it this year?!!!! :)

i think it is luck where u live, petrol prices at the moment are dependent on competition in the surrounding area, i.e. If the big supermarket forecourts are near and other BP garages to compete with, if they are all within close proximity then petrol will be cheaper. common sense really. lol

Yes - How come diesel is now 13p more expensive than unleaded?

Me thinks were subsidising the unleaded price. :x

No use to me in Kent but still voted hot.
As gas prices are linked to oil prices how come the energy suppliers are not reducing the price of gas and electricty????

older diesels maybe but newer diesels are better hence the reason my c4 vts diesel is cheap on tax

i often find the Shell garage closest to me (A19 north of Hartlepool) cheaper than all other garages by a few pence. Not supprised to see this but good to see it coming down to finally reflect the drop in oil prices.

So why do more diesel vehicles have lower emissions than petrol variants???? Diesel also costs less to refine... the reason is that industry, lorries and trains, etc use diesel so the govt. is cashing in where they can, ie the mass users.

Same price in Grindley Brook outside Whitchurch in Shropshire yesterday - can't remember the last time the litres was going round quicker than the pounds.

total rubbish ,the emissions on diesels are normally a lot lower than petrol engines ,hence cheap road tax on diesels unlike petrols,the question we all need to ask is the utility co,wrongly linked the price of oil to inflate their prices eg high crude oil ,high gas elec price ,recent massive increases in gas prices are unjustified ,will gas co.reduce the prices now NO CHANCE media very quiet on this national scandal

That is because the tax system does not give due weight to the cacogenic matter that is emitted from all Diesel engines. Filters only capture some of the particulates. Even a new diesel engine fitted with a particulate filter will still emit particulates that cause lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. As the engine and the filter get older even more particulates escape. Because of the exhaust outlet position, small children are particularly vulnerable.

A modern petrol engine does not emit particulates and the catalytic convertor is a very efficient devise for cleaning the exhaust from a petrol engine.

WITH AT LEAST 50P TAKEN IN FUEL DUTY AND 17.5% VAT OF 80P (14P) The oil company take would be 16p per litre

Thats assuming GB et al don't reintroduce the deffered 2p escalation of April 2008.

We may be lucky but I think that I read somewhere that OPEC doves ( saudi etc) are prepared to live at an $80 a barrell price an will consent to cuts to maintain that next week (IRAN et al need a pice of $100 to support their economies) so if we stay in the mid to low 90s for any period of time I think it would be lucky.

Anything less and the whole world is in full scale super depression and running a car would be pointless anyway

ps anyone on here that think fuel duty is set in terms of "Green Issues" is either niave or a New Labour minister. Like its proposals for VED Reform it purely about raising taxes!. Next month I am not looking forward to the pre-budget speech when AD reveals how is going to afford all his economic measures ( either directly or by interest on the loans taken) when he will not be cutting public expenditure there i only one other route!

I think we should continue to moan, until we pay the same price as america, we do everything else like them so why not pay the same price for petrol.

good point, my theory is it costs the people who are trying to do good things for the planet more money to do so thats probably why we have to pay more, if that makes sense

Your wrong, tax is the largest proportion of the cost, not profit to the refiner.

shows you don't understand that a signifcant amount of the p at the pumps is TAX and not shown in the $/barrell which is for crude oil. I think In real terms a $2 drop in the barrell price => 1p drop in pump price if truly elastic.

Also factor in price @ £147 £:S was around 2.10

its now 1.70 ish

This means that the amount of fall is offset byt eh fact that the £ buys less dollars!

Roughly 50p (Fuel Duty) + 17.5%(VAT) of pump price => TAX ( so if gordon really wanted to see a significant fall in pump prices he could do more than the oil companies!)
