I prefer a higher retention myself but still a good deal.

Frugal USENET - isn't that the honeypot run by MPAA?

99% of stuff I have downloaded from Usenet I have later purchased. If I can see someone took the time and trouble to do a good job then I thank them with payment. If not, I ditch the file.

This is a cheap price, but I'm afraid 300 days retention is just not good enough. I'd have thought 600+ would be better. Plus the service may be really dodgy, so your money would be poorly spent.

If you're serious about using Usenet do a little investigating of service/retention/limits (if any) and, of course, price.

If your ISP is Virgin they have a free news service, retention last time i checked was 30 days but ive heard stories its more than that, it has all the major groups and usually on a new file if i cant complete it with Astraweb im successful with Virgin. Great for free the details are.

    news.virginmedia.com
no username or password it knows if your a customer
connections i use 20 and it works
    no ssl

As for the deal avoid it, it will be useless stay with the best astraweb its only $11.

I think it's only 7 days (according to some of my mates).

I'm with BT and get 100 day retention for free :)

hows this compare to easynews? i currnetly use that £9.99 per mth, but cant access from work, and not used for ages so wasting time with it, but nice to have access..

Retention time is often on a sliding scale with messages at the longest extreme and binaries with progressively shorter retention periods depending on size and category.

This was certainly the case with Virgin. Retention of binaries only seemed to be up to one week, if ever that.

it used to be 7 days with VM but I have downloaded stuff that was 18 days old recently.. not tried any older yet

not very often you look for old stuff tbh... soon as it's there it's gotta be had!

Seen the deal via the matrix and only issues are the 300 day retention, everything else about them are fine.
Frugal are owned by blocknews who are one of the best block news providers.
DMCA takedowns are rare, so completions will be fine.

"news.virginmedia.com" seems to have its own problems, unusable!
