I've really wanted to read some of the batman graphic novels. Any recommendations from the ones on smiths?

EDIT: Googled some sites and IGN have a good article on what they think are the top 25 graphic novels: http://uk.comics.ign.com/articles/624/624619p1.html

The Killing Joke is an absolute classic, as is The Dark Knight Returns (by Alan Moore and Frank Miller respectively).

Hush is awesome, but is right in the midst of continuity, so may be a bit confusing for newcomers (plus you need to read the second volume for the final part, which is not in the offer)

I would suggest you hunt down the Knightfall / Knightsend GNs, which are a brilliant slice of the Dark Knight in action. If you're looking for modern stuff, the epic (as in very long) saga of Cataclysm / No Man's Land is well worth a shot.

Hope this helps!

I've just ordered the Dark Knight returns and the killing joke from Amazon. They are the same price or slightly cheaper (a few pence) and I've got the months trial of prime so they'll be arriving tomorrow morning. :)

Thanks for the advice.

It's worth pointing out that WHSmith's free delivery is delivery to your local store not to your door.

I agree with Arkham and year one I also enjoyed Gotham central wich focuses more on the police dept rather than bat man.
I've also just finnished 'under the hood' which was ok but I'll have to read the rest to see if it actually goes anywhere

I thought The Killing Joke was disappointing, mainly because I am a big fan of Alan Moore (and to a lesser extent Brian Bolland) and it didn't really live up to my expectations.

The Dark Knight Returns is fantastic, I might buy another copy because the one I already own is in pretty bad shape and this is the cheapest I have seen it anywhere.

I wish I could find a cheap edition of Absolute Dark Knight. All the other absolute versions I have of other graphic novels are the dogs ********.

i have the Dark Knight Returns and not enjoying it at all, I guess that's just preferance though

Picked up Year One from Forbidden Planet the other week for a tenner. REALLY enjoyed it, though I got through it in a night. Looking to pick up Killing Joke, Long Halloween and Dark Knight Returns, but after reading some of Returns in Borders I was a little put off my Frank Millers art, despite his writing winning me over in Year One.

just finished both parts to under the hood, thought they were quite cool, like the drawings and storys pretty good. also just finished long halloween, death and the maidens and knightfall pt1, all enjoyable, altho the bat in knightfall seemed quite dated compared to rest. really enjoyed dark knight strikes again wen i read it yrs ago...

read war games pt 2 without havin read pt 1, but still made sense and was very good!

That is Hush :)

BTW, WHSmith have messed up the titles of a lot of the books. For example, Year One isn't 'Year One' but rather 'Year One: Ra's Al Ghul'. It's not the same novel, not by a long shot.

I've voted cold, the novels i want are exactly the same price at Amazon! WHSmith are a big no-no for me, i shouldn't have to google ISBN numbers to find out what books i'm buying :x

i used to be a massive fan of all the batman stuff and i havent read some of these so gonna have a look

i would order year 1 like a shot as it is a really good read, i like dave mazzis' artwork as it was really different at the time. Its worth checking out the miller/mazzi daredevil stuff as well - top stuff.

personally didnt really get into dk returns, the original was great though well worth a look

year one link is for something else, cant recommend that. Check out the real year one stuff though
Arkham was a disappointment when it came out, may dig my hardcover out and reread.
i like killing joke but it is a bit short.
Otherthan that nothing much jumped out to me

other than batman i would recommend you buy
The Sandman, The Preludes and Nocturnes at 8.57
decent price for a quality read of the first volume of the gaiman classic,
read this and you will get another i assure you

Gothic was good - a drugged up Batman was cool!

which of the list have modern and good artwork?

I can only read those with good artwork and hence cant be bothered with titles like the dark knight returns etc or other comics like watchmen despite their good reviews. I have the A4 hardback special edition of Hush which cost me around £100 or was it £50 for that title alone. The modern artwork I am talking about is the one like in Hush and Batman under the hood.
