Looks like a good deal, but can't work out whether a young driver surcharge would apply (24)... It states that the minimum age is 23 or 25 depending on vehicle class, but other than that there's no more information.

Good to keep in mind though!

Just be careful with Europcar - I had one for 3 weeks in France and left it back clean as new 2 weeks after I came home I got billed £266 on my credit card for damage :x I had photographed the car when I left it in, even with that they still did not believe me. I asked for the papers and found that on one, the damage sheet, someone had forged my signature - I am currently seeking legal advice. Europcar UK have washed their hands of it. This has been ongoing now for 9 weeks. Please note too that in Europe that there is a huge excess on cars for accidents or accidental damage. Thankfully I took out a years excess insurance with insurance4carhire £49 who will refund me the money in full but I am really angry that they have got away with this. As I said I am seeking legal advise ref this

Ask your legal advisor if you should make a formal complaint to the police. Surely, forgery is a criminal offence?

Before you take out the car, make sure you inspect it for damage before you sign anything...any scratches or dents - make sure its listed in the contract. Do the same when you are returning it.

Also, if you take it out with a full tank of petrol, return it with a full tank...sometimes they might say you can bring it back empty...what they dont tell you is that they charge you a ridiculous admin fee + a very overcharged filling fee. You dont find any of this out till your credit card statement arrives.

And finally, read every word in the terms and conditions....just a bit of advice from someone who has been stung a couple of times with this company.

For abroad, I usually get good quotes with: http://www.arguscarhire.com/

Please note that there IS a young driver surcharge.

There are two categories of young driver surcharge - one for those aged 22 or under, and one for those aged 23-24. As you would expect, the former is considerably more expensive, and depending upon the car you want and how long you want it for, it could almost double your rental cost.

On the "Select a Vehicle" page, look in the bottom right corner and find the option which is marked "Need extras? (Child seat, GPS, Roof rack ...etc...)" and you'll see that on a 3-day rental, the first category (21-22) attracts a surcharge of over £50, and the second category (23-24) attracts a £35 surcharge.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but I'd get ready to pay a bit more than you expected to when you arrive to pick up your car.

DO NOT RENT FROM THEM, just check their reputation on line, we were billed for £230 last year for a broken wing mirror and i swear the car was perfect when we gave it back, they refuse to check it over then 2 weeks later you get aq bill, this is common place, please check

I know this is probably too little too late, but the information i am about to give you will prevent a scenario like this ever happening. Hiring a car from a rental company is never a risk as long as you do your homework. It seems to me that when you returned your car to the branch you were either late for your flight or you used the express return facility were you just complete the paperwork and drop it off in a box/desk. To prevent any doubt always get the car checked in and finalised by the rental staff. they confirm everything is OK and they confirm your deposit/excess is returned to your CC. I rent cars all over Spain/UK/USA and the middle east and this is the procedure I follow. I don't mean to be a smart alec, but this just involves forward planning (in the ideal world). good luck with this issue.

As others have indicated, Europcar are the worst for customer service. I have never had so many problems with any other CS and I've dealt with BT on many occasions! I was just thankful that I booked through AutoEurope AND BOUGHT THE EXCESS BUY-OUT as they handled everything.

I'd NEVER book directly with Europcar unless I had 3rd party excess buyout with a reliable insurer.

The situation: we came back to a car park to find that someone had obviously side-swiped our car. Most of it buffed off, but there was a one-inch scratch. I pointed it out to Europcar, did the accident report and everything and was told by the assessor that it wouldn't be charged as it was too minor. I was then told that it would be charged when I dropped the keys in. I asked for the paperwork on several occasions, including the report and receipt that they had kept - none of this ever arrived despite speaking to several people who all transferred me around randomly. They then took £300 out of my account several months later - for a 1 inch scratch?! - but luckily one e-mail to AutoEurope and it was all sorted.
I wish I'd read reviews before using Europcar as there are so many stories of random, very high amounts of money being taken from people's credit cards without explanation. If you can, perhaps get a new credit card through your issuer after you have used Europcar so they at least have to contact you and advise you if they want money.

Did you perhaps have legal expenses insurance cover in say your travel insurance policy .many such policies include legal advisory services and then action against the perpetrators of the crime. I do not believe that Europcar UK would be able to wash their hands of this. I would most definitely write to their Managing Director insisting that he take personal responsibility for investigating. If any Company - and Europcar are normally very good - gets away with this type of thing then it will only give further encouragement. Also ask your CREDIT CARD company to IMMEDIATELY refund the money that was "stolen" from your account and leave them to sort it out with Europcard .... Good luck...

Hello everyone ive decided to post an update....surprisingly for everyone here everything went smoothly no problems at all... went in to pick up the car... instead of a golf 1.4 they gave me a Seat 1.9 Tdi (which was much better i thought...very nippy car!!). Got the car within 5mins .. checked for damage etc (thanks everyone for their help/advice). returned the car on tuesday morning with no problems. I think from some of the postings here some people have not had the best of experiences with them but i really think it depends on the person who deals with you, who in my case was really helpful. Will definetly rent again from here.

Best of luck to every one.

Thanks for the update. Did you have to pay a young driver surcharge after all, or was it waived?
