Hi All,
For those that don't already shop at LIDL I would seriously recommend a visit to your local LIDL. There is 70% fruit and veg at the minute, it saved me an absolute fortune.

My weekly shopping for two has gone from £40 to £20

Its not nationwide, i have found the quality pretty poor in my local Lidl for fresh veg.

I have found quality depends on when you go (time of day). Lidl's ham is the best...so's the salami!....and cheap!

Be aware that some supermarkets play tricks like spraying fruit/veg with preservatives in order to get it to last longer. Bananas are picked when green and placed in a gas chamber full of ethylene gas in order to ripen them. Apples are covered in wax so that the air can't get to them.

Fruit/veg that goes off is probably a good sign!

One tip with Lidl veg/fruit is to take it out of it's wrapping as soon as you get it home. (Fruit/veg tends to sweat if left wrapped and goes mouldy quicker.)

We do this with Lidl Iceberg lettuces, unwrap them, wrap them in paper kichen towel and place them in the fridge. They can last two weeks or more.

If we leave them wrapped in the original plastic we're lucky to get three days.

Another recommendation at the moment is for the Lild frozen Turkeys. They arereduced at the moment but are bound to go up nearer Xmas and the quality is good. If you have a freezer you can beat the possible Turkey shortage!

They also have Goose/Duck on special offer at the moment along with cheap carlsberg lager..

every banana you buy goes through the same sort of thing.if they picked them when they are ripe they would be no good by the time they got here.

I worked with a guy that was a manager of lidl, he said the van that the fruit and veg lidl done was also the same stuff that m&s did.

On a completely different subject:

He also said that when they were short on staff they would get job applicants in on a half day trial an so they could get them to tidy / stock the shop and then not take them on !!!

I tend not to use lidl !

I agree with you here. The best time is earlier in the day.

Also you need to remember this is a budget store so things like sprays are not used to make the produce better, if anyone who has shopped at lidl will know what I am talking about ;)

Maybe the same lorry but its different quality, alot of it is class II, i have found when getting apples for example they are bruised and you cant see it until you open the packaging
