Yep I got one couple of weeks back, as I said to another guy who wanted to know how easy it was "you just basically unscrew and rescrew 3 screws". Sure beats the size of any harddrive that Sony can come with soon in the next few years assuming they upgraded the sizes. Though I now find myself thinking "there's no games to play" (that *I* like at the moment though I hope in future that changes).

Surely you just copy them back the same way you did when you originally saved them
#11
not bad for a 2.5"

Might pick one up for my xbox, 250GB is a bit hardcore though!
#12
Ok, once you have your Big drive, what are you going to store on it? Music? Movies? Dont see the point.

some PS3 games install to the hard drive. 5GB a time

then you have demos.

Music and Movies you just stream off of a computer, so no need to store them on the console

I bought one of these WD2500BEVS hard drives to upgrade my Macbook to 250GB - piece of cake to do for any Apple users. I paid about a tenner more than this price, so voted hot! Might be worthwhile ammending the title to include the hard drive model number and to show that it's not exclusively for PS3 users?

Well worth it especially as playtv is about to hit the shops.

Officially announced August 22, 2007; PlayTV is a twin-channel DVB-T tuner peripheral with digital video recorder (DVR) software which allows users to record television programs to the PlayStation 3 hard drive for later viewing. Wi-Fi connectivity with a PSP allows for portable viewing of live or recorded television programming. Recorded programs can be transcoded and transferred via USB to the PSP for viewing programs on the go. The software features a 7-day electronic program guide for utilizing the DVR features.[21] PlayTV is officially set to release in Spring 2008; with SCE New Zealand's head of marketing Warwick Light stating that the product is hoped to be released around the same time as the region's terrestrial Freeview digital broadcast service launches (currently expected in March 2008).[22].
Also if you listen to the HD-DVD brigades sourgrapes, it will come in handy for storing HD Movie downloads.

I have to agree here. The only thing I can think of is being able to install linux on a bigger partition. This is great if your a major linux enthusiast. But I imagine the majority of PS3 owners will have a hard time using 40gb. I guess a lot hinges on homebrew applications etc.

Thumbs up for making everyone aware of the "ease of upgrade" factor. I didn't know is was so straight forward. But it just boils down to how this extra space can be used.

This is such a good deal for us ps3 owners and and others, why do you need to mention the 360? I've seen your posts and know you like teh fanboy wars, but I hope there isn't one on this thread.

Why do people upgrade their pc/laptop hdds then? I've copied some divx files off of my portable external hdd which is soon to run out of space, so this great. I can have my whole divx collection on my ps3. I prefer that to streaming. Also, demo and installs can take up alot of space over time, not to mention the forthcoming Playtv (which I personally have no interest in)

Dont know if you are aware, but there is a free bit of software called mkv2vob which converts hd x264/mkv files so you can watch them.

Because it is a hard drive. It's sole use isn't just to upgrade PS3s :? It can be used in many products

Nothing fanboy about it.

If I was a fanboy, I would of made a bigger deal of the inaccurate original post (propergander)

any easy way of getting all the saved stuff off from the PS3 harddrive (downloaded demos, pics, music etc etc) onto this new drive. Not sure if its easy to do, can I hook it upto a usb harddrive, so take all the stuff off the current hard drive, transfer it to the connected usb hard drive, then transfer it all back to the new upgraded/larger hard drive from the usb drive.

Hope ive made sense, greatly appreciate some advice, dont want to lose all the current stuff on the original drive.

PS3 is great but remember all the games are shortly to be released on blue ray disks only and will retail at £60 and that comes from someone I know who works in the industry before you Sony lovers give me s**t

haha right...
a) they already come on blu ray disc..
b) if they didnt, do you not think someone at sony would have told amazon, play, hmv, zavvi, etc, etc so that they could reflect your secret info in their pre-order prices .

You absolute fool..

Uhm.. PS3 games have always been on blu-ray disks.. And if you know where to shop (many of the deals on here) you can pick up PS3 games for about £20

I didn't mean you, I meant the op. Should have mentioned that

Xbox 360 is for hardcore gamers, you need to like racing, shooting (killing) and sports games as that is all you get.

PS3 is for ponces

Wii is for gays and family

But really if you get an xbox 360 get an arcade as it has all the new chips in and is not likely to get red rings of death. Get the extra bits later

Wow you're stupid. Nobody here cares about your fake people in the "industry" who obviously know nothing.

IGNORE this. This guy has no idea what he is talking about. As has been said ps3 games have allways been on blueray and they would be shooting them selves in the foot if the price was going to go up, because they would loose all sales.

The PS3. Hope that helps

This CANNOT be used with the 360 (well, you can put it in an external enclosure and use it via usb to store media on).

Also the original xbox uses 3.5" IDE not 2.5" sata so it's useless for that - if you have an xbox get a 500gb 3.5" drive for less.

agreed, Blu-ray is doing well (he says trying to avoid any arguments!) and contrary to some belief, there are some brilliant games out there. I bought it 70% as a hi-def dvd player, glad i did!

I'm in the process of buying an Apple TV so I won't be upgrading my PS3 HDD today but if I had realised it was this easy, I may have contemplated it instead! :p
#33
Hmm may buy to pop in my Macbook Pro. Was really looking for a 7200 drive but can't warrant double the price for same amount of storage.

as i understand it the internal sata connector on the ps3 is just a normal sata one, so why not get an external 500gb esata drive for about £70 and a esata-> sata convertor cable for about £2.
While its not exactly an elegant solution, its a lot more storage for the money!

so your telling me if i install the harddrive everything which i had on my old hard drive will automatically transfer to the new one?

decent price i bought a maxtor 160gb for £38 on ebay.

Got to disagree about the PS3 for games - if it wasn't for the BluRay I'd have sold mine ages ago as it's complete **** in comparison to the 360 for gaming.
#39
neither the ps3 or the 360 (nor the wii really) are very inspiring when it comes to games. My 360 sat in a cupboard for 2 years as there was little worth playing on it.

As soon as the ps3 can playback x264 in a MKV container properly I'll get one, but I doubt I'll bother with many games (certainly not before an iso loader appears anyway ;> ).

You'll need a 3.5" drive for that, not this one.
Oh and don't buy this for the 360, even if you somehow manage to get it working you'll only be able to use 20GB.
