Does this help? As well as great Skype capabilities, the US Robotics Cordless Dual Phone connects to your existing phone line and operates as a standard telephone

Depends Jim. If you pay for Skype Out you can call other phones. If not, then just other people on Skype, Unless as amibees suggests you use it with your normal POTS telephone system.

Note that these phones cost between £20 and £30 regularly, NOT £99 as the misleading title suggests. Maybe that was the RRP a year ago but certainly not anymore.

Colder than a cold thing - there is a constant stream of USB inked Skype products sold of cheap, and probably for one good reason - Cheap, but Skype is useless, and MUCH more expensive than other VOIP for making calls. eg. www.voipcheap.co.uk or www.voipcheap.com

You need to have your PC and Router on to make a Skype call, wastes energy especially if you don't have both on all day & night normally.

If you want a DECT phone the quality of almost all is not very good, and Panasonic are head and shoulders above the others, but unfortunately usually a bit expensive :-(

If you are making PC to PC calls, your Windows PC has messenger installed by default so you need nothing extra but a mic and headphones or speakers which most people have anyway!

If you are interested in saving money on phone calls, have a look at www.moneysavingexpert.co.uk, where there is loads of info, VOIP, landline and mobile - rather than repeating it all here.

- call quality on the other services don't compare.
- if you get a skype subscription (i pay £1.45/month for unlimited calling us, mexico, canada and toll free globally) which also gives me a landline number i can call on my mobile and interface with skype. so, i can call the US using my O2 contract for free, and the call quality is crystal clear.

i've gone through the motions of using voipcheap and voipstunt and voipbuster. sure, they're cheap. but for efficiency, quality, features they're miles away.

I think you miss the point of Skype. You can make cheap international phonecalls with skype and people can call a PC to skype phone call for free so you're not tied to a PC.

Either way this is a good deal. Voted hot.

Typically it's only people who don't understand the functionality or purpose of a product who moan about it
Here's a great example of people not understanding the purpose of a product and moaning because of it.

link fails, also this requires your computer to be on. So this isn't really a Skype phone, it is a phone that connects wirelessly to your computer which is connecting to Skype.
Still the price good but I think the post should make it clearer that your PC must be on for this to work.

No vista support? I guess these are pretty old then...

Unless anyone knows which model they are and can point to a vista driver download page?

edit: support page: http://www.usr.com/support/s-main-menu.asp but I don't know what model it is...

edit: just gone through them, and it looks like this one: http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=9630 - which works on Vista 32 and 64 bit apparently

Sorry but I thought this site is mainly to post deals, not really to give tutorials and give a review of the product. Plus there is all the information written about the product. Hot deal from me.

That's a good point. I think it's better to contact cd discount for model no. I think it's this one:

Sadly a lot of people don't care about deals, they simply care if it'll work with their freeview box, if it'll work as a TV, if it'll work with their console and so on.

I know people are only trying to help but when you help people who are too lazy to find out for themselves you are merely rewarding and breeding their laziness. I wasn't sure when I first saw this deal whether it worked independantly of a PC so I went onto google and found out for myself. Why is that so hard for people on this site?

Call quality is EXCELLENT on MANY other VOIP services, more than just on what I have quoted, and WAY way better than BT landlines! Not an issue at all.

I can have a UK standard call in number for FREE, no need to pay for that, whoever you are with!

You can call any number of destinations on any number of services using your (paid for -its not FREE! That is the sort of waffle you hear from salesmen!) contract minutes! You don't have to be signed up with anyone and pay subscriptions to get that!
All these features or better are available elsewhere.

The killer for the deal?.......You don't mention the UK as being free.... probably because it is not on Skype! With Finearea/Betamax companies, you get 300 minutes UK calls per week free too, as well as the types of venues you mention - and when the free 3 months period is over, if you haven't used you non-free calls up, calling to more exotic destinations, (which it probably most users who MAINLY call the UK) then the 10quids worth (depending on current rates) of calls is still there to use up, at low rates! After all, most BT users get weekend calls free anyway as standard, and then cheap calls all evening (if they are not foolishly signed up to a dearer contract); so the 300 minutes are best used daytimes when call rates are so expensive!

Pay more... be my guest, but don't pretend there is ANY quality issue, with ANY of the services (not jsut Finearea) because there is NOT. You may have had some problems in the dim and VERY distant past, I didn't & I have been using a selection of these services for years and have tried them ALL, including Skype, but they are ALL a doddle to use.

I use VOIP in preference to landline anyway as I am a bit deaf, and this is one way of improving call quality!

I can use PC (and wander all over the house using a bluetooth headset, although I suppose you COULD do this with Skype too), on my laptop wirelessly, my PDA over WiFi to make calls, or even route it through other people's landline phone when away from home using the callback features - and of course you can use it on mobile contracted (paid-for) minutes too, (as you suggest) if that's what you want (I just don't pay high prices for a contract with vast numbers of minutes inclusive!) - and I can also use a standard telephone of whatever type too, by plugging it into my router, meaning I can call when my PC is NOT ON too - just the router, thereby saving power too.

Now... tell me, how does Skype get all THOSE features?

Like I say, lets not waste too much time on this thread, it has all been said before and lots of info is out there... just Skype is a total non-starter! It is EASY to set up, admittedly, but the other options are very little different now, if not easier - and there will be very few if ANY users who can not easily beat the costs of Skype with minimal effort!

Are you certain it can be? Without the USB being connected?.. one other similar type could not be.

Besides, cheap DECT phones are NOT up to much at all, if you read threads on other DECT offers, then you would know the arguments... some very big names have poor sound - besides, cheap DECT is only this sort of price anyway

does it locked with skype? can i use my own SIP setting from like voipcheap, voipraider?
my adsl modem router has a spare usb port. Can I use it to connect the phone?
If yes to both questions, i would buy one.
Otherwise i will stick to my linksys pap2.

If this is like most others, then it isn't a case of locked, it is a case of it is designed ONLY to work with Skype, no configuration options at all :-(

This looks like a really hot deal ...

Just for clarity, do I plug the receiver box into my broadband router AND phone line, and then the two phones connect wirelessly to the receiver box to enable me to make skype calls and normal landline calls?

Secondly, does the receiver box have to be plugged into a computer using a USB cable, or can it just be plugged into the router so that I can make skype calls without turning on my pc?
1 Like #28
Ahhhh just had a mooch around the internet, the receiver box has to be plugged into the computer and your pc has to be on in order to make a skype call .... still not a bad price, but one would be a fool to pay anything more than £40 for this.

This phone is the real deal: http://www.netgear.com/Products/CommunicationsVoIP/Skype/SPH200D.aspx

Plugs straight into your broadband router, so your pc does not need to be on.
#29
Thanks vishy. I will give this a pass...and look for a deal on the netgear product.
Need a skype phone that will work without the computer turned ON.
To be more precise, I need something that will work with cable broadband....no router. Hopefully I can plug the cable broadband into the netgear base station....

That's all fine and true but the cheapest price on that is from a reputable selling is about £110!!!!! It'd be cheaper to buy this deal and leave your PC on. An additional handset costs £50 or so as well.....

You would have to be a bit of a fool to pay £40 or more for this as it's on sale for £15 in this deal...

I am not debating it's a bloody good deal at £15 ... seriously excellent value. But if you are looking for a purer solution that cuts out the need to have a computer on then I am just simply saying that this is not a suitable solution. The reality is skype phones that require connection to a computer through USB are really quite cheap (although good quality wireless ones like this are worth paying extra for) ... whereas proper ones like the netgear phone I mentioned are not available so cheap for a good reason ...

A sample scenario. Say you want to buy a wireless skype phone solution for yourself, and one for your Mum and Dad (both of whom are rubbish with using computers). Buying a voip / skype phone that does not require a computer to be on means that they are more likely to use the phone, saves electricity, can still be used if something goes wrong with pc, you don't have to put up with a computer whirring away in the background, and if you have parents that are trying to save the pennies they will just turn around and say "oh I turned the computer off to save money", ... etc, etc ...

are you trying to compare a £15 phone with £110/£120 phone? (I think you must be joking for that)*
btw if you are thinking of comparing because you have one better feature go for

It will give you wifi access.
