These have dropped back down a few quid to nearer the £50 mark again. Remember this is for a USB 3.0 HD not just USB 2.0

They aren't listed online (just the USB 2.0 for £49, not this USB 3.0).

The one's in PC World are USB 2.0 only, not both 2.0 and 3.0 like these. Cheers to the OP, will be ordering one of these

these are nice drives - I got the USB 2 version for £45 at currys for use with WD live tv player - speed is ample for transferring films etc.

Looking for a portable HDD at the moment. Could anyone please spare a minute to explain the benefits of USB 3 over 2?

Many thanks

External USB 2 hard drive should be fast enough for most but if you want to futureproof than USB 3 is the way to go. Dont forget USB 3 will only work at full speed (real world speed 190MBps) if your computer has USB 3, if u only have USB 2 it will work but only at USB 2 speed which is 30MBps.

Anyone able to give an idea of how much difference USB 3.0 makes over a USB 2.0 one, and how much do USB 3.0 expansion cards usually cost?

This is potentially £47 on best buy with the 20% cashback through quidco.
