Seems like a good price for a USB3 enclosure - delivery can take a couple of weeks.

There are some actually cheaper on Ebay, though arguably not as good looking as this one.

I've read that max drive capacity is 2Tb. [and I don't think there must be too many of those 2.5" drives around :) ]

Anyone used a USB 3.0 external device whoi can confirm whether they really do work at the higher throughput? i.e. are they a really worthwhile upgrade?

Yeah I built myself a USB 3 external hdd, mine runs at 35 to 40 megs a second so it's definitely faster but my hdd in the pc bottleneck the speed.

cheers cost me £12.66

What is the minimum spec drive you need to benefit from USB3.0? Could I pop the 320Gb drive out of my Western Digital portable drive casing, put it in this and get the faster speed if I get a USB3.0 expresscard for my laptop?

i think any hdd should be capable of running at a much much higher speed then usb 2 can transfer at.
On my setup I am using a samsung spinpoint 1tb f3 drive which in theory should be able to run at 3gbs but in practice runs ALOT slower then that. Its still pretty quick though, I can transfer my entire music and video collection (about 280gb) to the external hdd in about 20 minutes

Your F3 will peak at around 100MB/s sequential read/write which is 800Mb/s or 0.8Gb/s so well within the maximum SATA2 transfer rate of 3Gb/s. USB2 is typically limited to around 30MB/s and so your F3 will benefit from a USB3 interface which has a similar transfer rate to SATA2.

That's only top end USB2 speed, I'd expect around 60meg/sec for USB3.
i.e. bottleneck is the drive, not the interface.

you could stick a cheap SSD in here and have a stunning external drive :D
