Temporary discount from Apple.
The USB-C to USB Adapter lets you connect iOS devices and many of your standard USB accessories to a MacBook with USB-C port or MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports.
Plug the USB-C end of the adapter into the USB-C port on your MacBook or any Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on your MacBook Pro, and then connect your flash drive, camera or other standard USB device. You can also connect a Lightning to USB cable to sync and charge your iPhone, iPad or iPod.

I guess this is because even Apple realised it's absolutely bonkers that you can't plug in your nice new £700+ flagship iPhone into their £1500+ flagship MacBook Pro out of the box. It's still ridiculous that after spending £2200+, their 2 latest flagship products can't be plugged into each other without spending more money.

isn't that the point of apple, company gets more money, customer buys another overpriced official item.

I think you can use a generic £2 USB adapter as these aren't Thunderbolt 3 adapters but merely USB adapters.

I use the below Aukey one from Amazon which was £2.99 for my Nexus 6P, says works on Apple devices also.

Aukey USB C>A female Adapter

I use that adapter with my MacBook Pro 2016 - it's small enough that you can charge with one port and plug this in the port next to it. It is a very tight fit though and it takes some force to insert/remove a USB plug.
