Good price if all you need is a cd drive that doesn't do dvd's.
If you want to load install the latest MS Office from DVD look elswhere though.
#2
Not bad for a USB powered cdrom drive.

Quite a lot of software is on DVDs nowadays though...
#3
Junk, apparently. You can get portable DVD drives for £20.

Amazon does Liteon DVD rom drives in black or white for around £27.

A Cd rom would be next to useless imo

A CD ROM drive is next to useless nowadays. Needs to be atleast DVD, and preferably a writer to make it even worth looking at.
#9
Seems like a good price to me if you just want to import some cd's onto a netbook , this would be ideal .
#10
Is this the thing i would need for my netbook? just to upload my camera and play games or is that a dvd one i need?

If you're wanting to play games on your Netbook, then you're going to want to get a DVD drive. This would be fine though if you wanted to install TinyXP on your Netbook though!
#12
made the mistake of getting one of these (buying quickly, not reading the specs properly, in a rush etc. etc.), and then realising that it was only a CDRom drive. Is it good value? Sooner or later - more than likely sooner - you'll need a DVD drive and of course they also take CD's so it's worth stumping up the extra few notes to save the doofus pain I gave myself. Doh!
#13
Who uses only cds anymore? everything comes on a dvd. Cds are only used as an audio medium and otherwise is a totally redundant medium.
#14
I'm not sure why anyone would want this these days to be honest, but I very rarely use CD's for anything anymore so I may not be the best judge.
#15
I use my bargainous 360 HD DVD drive :)
#16
how wrong so many people are. perfect for me as I have over 15,000 cds to rip on 3 different pc's, so need an extra drive and this is PERFECT. thank you.

True but still useful. They are £20 on Cex website.

Good if you just wanna put your CD's on your netbook. A lot of stuff is on DVD now days though. Voted hot anyway! Sure it would be handy for some.
#20
With DVD drives I'd get a mains powered one. Some of these slimline self powered USB ones have problems with delayed reads and cause i/o errors with intensive reads such as when you're doing an operating system install.

Most of the time you'd have your software on a portable hard drive anyway, so for the few times you need an external DVD drive, I'd get the more reliable mains powered ones. They're also much faster at reading/writing.
#21
imho
I thing someone would be better off putting that £10 towards a DVD drive really...
much more useful then just a cd drive so am voting cold...
#22
no one has mentioned the 15 1 star reviews on amazon saying how crappy they are??

none for £10.99?:whistling:

Should "Fulfilled by Amazon" deals be allowed, as its still not Amazon's stock, its stock the Amazon Marketplace seller has sent to Amazon initially, and then Amazon store it, and send to the customer when an order is placed through Amazon Marketplace?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/seller/fba/fulfillment-by-amazon.html

Just wondering.

VCDs did though, and about the only thing useful about having a CDROM Drive attached to a Driveless computer AKA Netbook, other than playing CDs.

False economy, £11 wasted towards a DVD Rom Drive.
#29
i reckon this is a pretty good deal. i got my mum a netbook and she uses it to type word document, go on the internet and listen to music that i put into itunes for her. i just know soon she'll ask me to put more music on it, so i reckon for a tenner its pretty good. its a dell running OSX, so whoever was asking about a macbook, this would work, trust me

Cheap add on to rip CDs though? Not disagreeing but £11 isn't much moolah. Not compared to the £599 I just dropped on a new iPhone......;-)
#31
cheaper on ebay for starters.
#32
Agree with the sentiments here. I guess most people have misread the title as DVD drive, not CD drive. Would have been scorching had this been posted 10 years ago. I got my usb slimline DVD drive last year from a bulk hong kong seller for £18 inc delivery, no tax or fees etc. All 50 or so were snapped up within a few hours, but he does list them again every so often.

I said 'It's junk, apparently.'

Perhaps I should be less cryptic in future.
#34
Mine arrived, and works great - bargain.

No, its not a DVD, nor described as one
but its less than half the price of a dvd drive (assuming you can get a dvd drive for £20...)
- and for £10 delivered is a bargain IMO.

Not necessarily - a netbook would likely not be able to run many games that come on DVD. Older CD-based games might be all the netbook is capable of running.

this was probably good in 1995, but come on mate get with the ruddy times
