Vaio E Series 17", i5, Blu-Ray Writer, 1920 x 1080 Screen, 4 Gb Ram, Radeon HD 7650M 2Gb Graphics £566.36 @ Sony (Education Store)
**update, they've changed things slightly, its a free screen upgrade now, which is worth slighty less than the blu-ray writer, you now get nearly the same spec and exact same price apart from the blu-ray writer, instead you get a blu-ray reader, comes to 594.26 for the exact same build as before***
First of you need to go through the education store to get the price listed, you save around £50 on the configuration ive listed. At the moment they are offering a free blu-ray writer and the upgrades are reasonable, so altogether i think its pretty good value. You can get it with the Intel® CoreTM i7-3612QM for £677.96. The configuration is as follows
Intel® CoreTM i5-2450M, 2.5GHz
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
320 GB Serial ATA (5400 rpm)
4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3-SDRAM
Blu-ray Disc(TM) writer
43.8cm LCD 1920x1080 + webcam
AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7650M 2GB
To get headline price, some more spec
HD digital camera
1 AC Adapter
3x USB 2.0 + 1x USB 3.0
Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11bgn)
HDMI(TM) output
HM76/-/-
Bluetooth® 4.0
Should be able to get 6.06% cashback with topcashback aswell.

Was about to spend £800 on a Asus with slightly better specs but this should do the trick if I could get it

Well you can get it through the normal sony site for just over £600, it asks you the following for the education store
First name *
Last name *
Educational Establishment *
Student ID number *
but you can fill it with anything and it lets you go through and order, tho they do say they can cancel the order if they check and you dont qualify, so to be on the safe side if you know any students id use their details perhaps, or just try your luck and order with false details, if it fails get the asus.

Provided they do actually check, the Student ID number given by the educational establishment of the persons details you're using would need to match with their First Name and Last Name, that is of course assuming their college/university accepts phone calls from Sony to confirm information like this on the basis of applying discounts.
The last generation E Series the 1080p screens were supposedly crap.
Oh and don't try putting standard drivers on, they'll refuse to install and BSOD if forced.
Oh and they mess with their monitor firmware too to make them incompatible with linux.
Their support also won't want to know, if it's not the pre-installed OS or official drivers, you're on your own.
My software fix for my various CW series problems was to sell it on eBay and get a Lenovo.
Currently own a white one of the previous E Series model, and a shame to say it's beocming a lot more dirty than if i were to own a black one :( Oh and go for the backlight keyboad! For a tenner more!
Decent price for a good brand though. Hot.
What's the problem with that? Most companies will only support the product they provide to you with their official updates, not when you start installing your own operating system or 3rd party drivers.
It's an excellent price for this laptop, nice to see a 1080p screen in particular. Skimps out a bit on the hard drive and memory thought, and I'm not sure that graphics card would be up to much gaming.
