I am really dumb but just got a blu ray player for a holiday home, will it play HD DVDs or does it depend on the players make?

Thanks

No standalone does both, some PC drives do, notably from LG I believe.
#15
Personally having bought two HD DVD's I would just consign them to history and move on.

If I don't have them on DVD then I buy Blu-ray now.

Just google it !

Just ordered, thanks OP!

I just need to rip them to my media server once, then consign them to the loft with my Blu-rays, DVDs, Cassettes and Vinyl's to gather dust.

£1.99 for a hi-def movie = Bargain

Thanks, will add some more to my collection, have 33 and Heroes Season 1 on HD DVD, all for under £100 inc the player, beat that blu-ray.

a discontinued format is cheaper than a live one
thats amazing
#19
Damn....have all but one of the good ones already!
#20
Are these heat resistant enough for putting pots or pans on or just hot tea and coffee mugs ? :p

Pity I got most of the good ones from HMV at 99p

Yep, and this forum is all about deals, deals involves saving money....if someone chooses to buy a HD DVD for 1.99 rather than the equivalent Blu Ray which could cost anything between 60-100% more in cost and have the same quality avc-1 transfer and Dolby True-HD sound then the only person thats losing out is the unwise one

I own both players, if something is cheaper on the one, I buy on that rather than the other, simple, just so happens I have more an extensive collection of HD DVDs because it lost the format war and the fire sales of titles have been far kinder on my pocket.

True Movie lovers like myself want High Def movies displayed on our HD TVs in the best quality possible, Blu Ray & HD DVD provides that, and currently some HD DVD titles are not available on Blu Ray, one of my favourite films The Big Lebowski being one, so for movie lovers its not about fanboyism of formats, who won vs who lost, its about getting the movies you want on whichever of the two EQUAL quality formats.

Ah bless you Mr PS3 fanboy.

I must say, I always enjoys your posts in putting down HD-DVD. They are always so original and funny. In fact, I always get my colleagues to crowd around my computer in anticipation of your next witticism. Oh the laughter that can be heard.

Or run the risk of never getting it at all, its russian roulette with HD DVD titles on price and availability, some I may have paid a couple of quid more for than I could have over time, however, some I am glad I did..else I would not have owned them at all. Mulholland Drive I paid 6 quid for, now try finding that title anywhere.

LG did a model BH-100 that was a home stand alone player that could play HD DVD and Blu-Ray.
#32
Thanks, I ordered Tremors and 12 Monkeys.

Show me that 2 for £3.98 Blu Ray deal and I'll be right on it.
#33
Dont forget the other post about Base.com - some of these come under their 10-HD-DVD packs for £12 delivered!)

Well, I wouldn't want to disappoint you and your work colleagues. HD-DVDs are a dead format, so in the words of Duncan Bannatyne..........I'm ooot.

Yes same sort of sale but after looking at DVD.co.uk I think the Blah site has more HD DVDs at £1.99. I would take a look there also. The deal is in the top 5 deals of the week at the moment so check it out. :whistling:
#37
Heat Added, what with this and the Blahdvd deal ( Same Company? ) ive added 7 new titles to my collection.
#38
I now have around 30-40 HDD and will get around to watching them at some point, along with the 250+ normal and 20+ Blu-Rays I've got to get around to watching. The HD are great value but at some point, after I've watched I will probably just sell the player and all the discs. Eventually the player will go bang or more likely the lazer will just fail.

Couldn't agree more. After all a movie in HD just ain't worth watching if nobody makes new players or discs anymore.
I'd rather pay four times the price just so I can watch the same film, in the same quality, at the same resolution, but in a shiny blue case (it just makes the whole film experience a lot better).
