Their website also mentions using a code VATNEW at checkout which should save a little bit more.

never buy an upright vax, they are loud akward to empty and don't have very good suction... i will never buy one again!

Just noticed they've got this Hoover for the same price, which seems to have similar stats but has a slightly higher wattage.
Wattage is even more pointless than megapixels on cameras - it is very easy to make an inefficient electric motor that turns all those watts into heat rather than suction, and people buy it because the wattage figure is higher :x. However, I notice that this one has washable filters whereas the other one doesn't, so lower running costs (assuming they're not cancelled out by the extra watts used:)).

Was it the same model at this one? This one could be entirely different.

Thanks for the info, ...do you know what IS a good way to compare the efficiency of those on the market? In the past I have looked at the watts as a guide (and how heavy the thing is for ease of use!). BTW. Good price, good find, thank you millarcat.

Watt? Sorry couldn't resist! Cheers for the tip re wattage. Is there an idea amount of watts for a upright vacuum cleaner?

I bought a VAX once, it had a trip switch for when it overheated which meant I could only use it for 5 minutes tnen I'd have to wait for it to cool down. VAX are a chinese manufacturer, nuff said. Get a SEBO

No - cleaning performance has very little to do with number of watts (unless it's ridiculously low like on battery-operated ones) - best just to ignore the figure. I see Hoover do two models which are only different in their colour and by 100W - this is nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

Well the Hoover one has a figure for "air watts" which at least gives you some idea of the usable power that comes OUT of the motor as opposed to the electricity that goes in. I think Dyson started that one, for which they should be congratulated. But again, there are many factors which affect how good a vacuum cleaner is.
