Manufacturer's Description

http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-kitchen/SDA/Vax/rapide.jpg

The Vax V-028M uses jets of water to apply AAA solution and clean water mix while the static brushbar gently agitates carpet fibres to break down embedded dirt and debris, leaving carpets refreshed and revitalised. It's powerful motor means that carpets dry quicker.

The V-028M is easy to fill, empty and use, which means that even sucking up accidental spills is made easy. The large tank capacity also ensures you spend less time refilling, and more time cleaning. The Rapide's wide cleaning path allows you to cover more carpet, more efficiently.

It gets good reviews and the price can't be beat (I couldn't find better, anyway). I figured I'll buy one, do the carpets and sell it on. It has to work out a lot less than the rental charges in my area.

Good find - thanks.

I have the one with upholstry connector and pre treatment spray. I'm pleased with the job its done.
Excellent price

Is it any better than this one that's half price at Argos?

I've got one of these (might not be the exact same model mind) and its rubbish. They're not remotely comparable to the rugdoctor machines, or the people you get in to clean the carpet.

The hand-held bit is useful to clean up the odd spill, but for the main bit, you have to go over and over and over the carpet to get any results, and even then its pretty rubbish.

This one has a larger dirty water tank larger than clean water tank - which makes more sense than the one posted above which has a dirty water tank 2/3s the size of the clean tank.

My parents had the orange cylinder VAX years ago. It spruced up the carpet well. We've got clean patches on our carpet where we've used vanish after a spillage however we need to remove some of the dirt on other areas to "blend" the clean areas...I've made that sound like I live in a dirty house!!! lol!! Far from it!

Years ago i had the orange vax, shaped like this. The problem with it, is the rubbish little tube where the cleaning solution trickles down. It didnt have any real force, so virtually as soon as the liquid came out of the tube to the carpet, it was sucked back up again before it could really do anything other than contact the top of the carpet/upholstery. I found it very frustrating. In the end i discovered that using a car washing sponge and a bucket of the cleaning solution/water, was by far the best way to wet the carpets and agitate the cleaner in. The vax was then brilliant at sucking it all back up again. Reading the details of this new vax the OP showed, it appears to force the solution into the carpet for you, which is exactly what the pull along model needed, along with brushes.

I would definitely go for the push along model because of this, assuming that it is good at sucking the liquid back up.

I've got a slightly different model which I picked up Brand New for about £40 on ebay last year.

I have been very pleased with its performance.

When we moved house 2 years ago we inherited a beige carpet that was very dirty. Sticky spills and all kinds of things that the previous occupants were clearly too lazy to clear up.

This VAX has done a good job and with a top up clean every few months keeps the carpet in good order.

I've never caught the idea of these carpet washers...I mean..what if u have wooden boards under the carpet which most houses have?...wont the water soak those and produce mould?..or if it really got soaked..wont the water run between the boards and if its upstairs ur cleaning, wont the water seap through the ceiling downstairs?

They don't put enough water into your carpet that it would soak right through to the floorboards to damage them. And a second or two after the cleaning solution is sprayed into the carpet, the sucking part of the machine is drawing 90% of the liquid right back up into the machine, taking the dirt with it, so leaving your carpet only slightly damp. I'd be surprised if any of these machines can even force the cleaning solution down as far as the floorboards. There is no risk of mouldy floor boards or of flooding the downstairs neigbours. :)
