  How safe is data when stored on a USB drive like this? I use them for transfering files all the time but was thinking of using one like this for storing photos on incase of hardware failure (its happened to me before, I hadn't backed up) because I'm running out of free space on google drive and dropbox. Would this suffice? I probably won't need much more than 20gb for the next year or two.

  HDD, offline HDD backup and cloud for critical data are sufficient. Anything more than that and backing up becomes such a chore that most people won't stick to their regimen.

  So I'd need to pay to expand googledrive (or similar cloud storage) and use USB storage and keep it safe on my laptop? Makes sense I guess for precious things like photos, you don't realise how precious they are until they are gone :( so its worth putting the effort in to protect them.

  That's pretty cheap but USB3 flash drives go as fast as 170MB/s write, so 25MB/s is a bit meh - a darnsite faster than most USB2 drives; I guess you won't see Sandisk's USB3 this cheap anytime soon either.
