eslick: If you are after a Beetle GSR with the 2.0TSI engine then shop around - there are some very generous discounts around for them. My local dealership (Pulman Sunderland) were selling a couple for £17995 very recently, i'm sure there's deals to be had on these all over the country.

Our local dealer too but unfortunately won't be getting one any time soon.

VW/Skoda/Audi/Seat? All the same. And just to add, nobody buys a golf because they like them.

What a ridiculous statement - of course Golf buyers like their cars. It's the biggest seller in Europe, year on year. The Golf has a very low fleet presence in the UK at least, one of the main reasons they hold their value so well - there isn't a mass dumping of 3 year old Golfs on the car auctions from fleet sales like you will see with the Focus and Astra. Most of the poeple who drive a Golf new are private buyers. When people are spending their own money on a private car spend, you will find that they care a lot more about what they are spending their money on than the average company car driver.

They do very well in the second hand market too - people are prepared to pay a premium for them on the used market over most of their peers, why would they do that for a car they did not like? They are very well equipped as standard (for a German car), drive very well (have you driven a Golf in the last 9 years? Nothing comes close to a Golf and a Focus (in the small medium car segment) in terms of handling, thanks to the multilink rear suspension that both cars have. The likes of Honda Civic had it on the last gen and cut it out for the current gen to make cost savings, ruining the handling in the process). VWs excel in safety tests with generous levels of safety related equipment that you will find hard to beat within their respective segments.

Under the skin Audi/Seat/Skoda/VW are pretty much the same, i'll give you that. The main differences are:-

Audi and VW are almost the same - slightly nicer interior on the Audi and a fair bit less standard equipment than the VW are what sets the 2 apart (have you ever driven an Audi with an S-line interior? You'll know what i'm talking about if you have). Skoda gives you a lot for your money than any of the other VAG cars, but better residuals on the VWs usually evens that out. For me Seat is the poor boy of VW. They are uniquely styled, very sporty looking in that Astra VXR/Focus ST style that appeals to boy racers, a lot less conservative looking than the other VAG marques, but feel the most cheap inside as the interior doesn't feel premium like the other VAG marques do.

+1

Summarises it perfectly.

Yeah right.

Never really got the Beetle. Yes, sure you can add a flower in the pen holder and jazz it up a bit, but really that boot is small and doesn't seem to do anything particularly well. It seems quite a lot of money for a 2 door car that isn't really too much car IMO.

Have you seen the new ones no flower holder anymore and a bigger car :)

eslick - No, can't say I have. Will keep my eyes peeled on the roads for one. Got a 250 mile journey in the morning, so maybe might see one on my travels. I'm still not sure about the appeal for a beetle though. Still each to their own eh? Is it still young females that buy em?

Sat in the new one a few weeks ago and it much bigger and chunkier than the old ones or the last one, think it looks quiet a cool car not like the last one or a modern mini but won't get one the wife doesn't like it:)

I hired this car and for me I did not feel safe. Im not going to lie I do like to have a bit of fun whilst driving. The brakes are very ineffective, if you Steer too sharp the car feels like it's going to tip over and when I put my foot down I could smell a burning rubbery smell, and a wierd knocking sound came from the engine which shows its not very robust mechanically. I guess it's ok for gentle driving in the city which is what it was made for. Just don't get any other ideas

You have to pay extra for the wide wheels, lowered suspension and big exhaust!

Doesnt work for me.
Good deal. Yes the autos a little jerky but its how you drive it. I have the High Up! from new as a second car for a month now. It's got a good kick down and when in manual mode the the changes are driver selected obviously and such a hoot. Useful in the city and on motorways with cruise control. personal preference really.
We also bought a 'High UP!' in March and we love it. Much more spacious than it looks, comfortable and fun to drive. Probably not ideal if you're regularly covering long distances but perfect for suburban/local driving. Feels solid/safe, is very economical and it's a breeze to park. 3 year warranty is standard, I believe.
@Itsabargain69 - Don't forget that Jeremy Clarkson stated that hire cars are the fastest... in the world. Probably because everyone rags the poop out of them. Yours may have been ready for its service.

I have the 74bhp High Up! Bluemotion (stop/start engine) which means no road tax & 76.2mpg (I've had 73.5 myself), and a full size spare wheel.
It takes a little while to get up to motorway speeds, but once there it'll keep up all day.

I only have 2 pieces of advice for buying this car.
1: Yes
2: Don't get the automatic, it's only single clutch so gear changes are a little jerky
