(Product Code: 00661812 ) A smooth, elegant red with delicate flavours of cherry fruit and baked herbs. Though the wine is made in the warm, sunny climes of the Douro Valley, more commonly associated with Port, it shows a decidedly restrained, mid-weight style that makes for deliciously easy drinking.

Anyone had this wine before - what's it like?

Good, bad, indifferent?

Had to look up this wine, ... seems to be genuine and made with 30% each tinta roriz, touriga franca, tinta barroca and 10% touriga nacional ... very much Douro varieties. Tasting notes OK, but not necessarily from this vintage.

However, it is from Quinta de Ventozelo who make wine under their own name, so might be a second wine. Quinta de Ventozelo is part of Real Companhia Velha, which is a well-established Port company, founded in 1756.

Douro wines tend to be quite "closed" and tannic when first opened, so it may need to be left a few hours. However, once opened they are amongst the best wines Portugal has to offer - and it has a lot of good wines.

There's always the chance this one isn't one of the best ............ but it's from M&S, so I'm sure they'll refund Must be worth a punt at this price!

vinzelo douro 2006 Color
The color is ruby red. Not too thin, but definitely not on the black or purple side of the red wine spectrum.

Aroma
Loads of red fruit on the nose. Strawberry, raspberry and cherries. I also detect a bit of mint. The wine is nice and open.

Flavor
Very fruity with mild tannins and some acidity on the finish. There is a little bit of the dry chalkiness in it from the tannins. The fruit again seems to be mainly red fruit, such as cherries and plums. On the finish, there are some sour cherries showing up. It is an average wine which I am more inclined to drink with food and not on its own. I’d pair it with pasta and red sauce, pizza, and mild cheese.

So, in summary - it's quite quaffable for a drink at home?

I have been buying a Douro from Waitrose for £8.50. It was top wine on the Oz Clarke Wine Tasting webcast a few months back. Its really nice, so if this is similar for the same price it could be a good deal! Can you buy a bottle or is it case only?
