I have been watching this for a while and have noticed that Virgin have reduced the price to fly return to Miami to £308 per adult, from £450 last week. (In my case; 2 adults & 1 infant, total cost is now £690, reduced from £950 last week!). This reduction has happened today. The price seems to be valid on many selected dates between September 2009 and March 2010. Probably similar reductions also to many other USA destinations.

Noted about Miami!

I always fly to Miami but head out of the city; about 1 hour north, places like Boca Raton is really nice; or to the south is the Florida Keys; very nice also!

Miami is great - You need to be on South Beach (area in Miami ) - dont live in downtown as that is unsafe!

The wife and I stopped over in LA (Beverly Hills) on our honeymoon. It was ok, we stopped at the Luxe hotel on Rodeo drive. There wasn't too much in the area once the shops had closed. Went down to Santa Monica which was good, bizarrely we managed to find a bar serving traditional English beers. I had a few too many and the wife and I had our first married row:giggle:

virgin are reducing the number of flights, especially the LA one soon
they are also making more staff redundancies

did a fly drive up and down the west coast and LA was definitely the worst bit, dirty and a little boring actually, head up to San Francisco it is fantastic.

If anyone has any pointers as to which cities to see on the West Coast it would be appreciated. I am going in September, flying in to San Francisco, spending a few days there and then driving down the coast to LA, so need to know where the best places are to stop if anyone has done this kinda thing before? Ater that we are off to Vegas for 5 days.

Thanks in advance :-D

Did something similar many years ago. Flew into SF and returned from LA 3 weeks later with no concrete bookings or plans inbetween, we just went where we fancied when we fancied.

Some quick tips, SF is fantastic, make sure you visit Alcatraz and do the audio tour, its very good.

You are not too far from Vegas, well worth visiting, but if you do, try and go midweek as room prices are much more expensive at weekends.

If you ant to go a little furthe south, San Diego was our favourite city. We stayed in La Jolla a few miles north of the city and at that time it reminded me of a Cornish seaside town, complete with village green and train track running along the coast. Might be different now as I believe it is a very popular destination.

LA was massive and sprawled out and was our least favourite destination.

If you're going to LA expecting "Rock Nirvana", then you might be disappointed. The gigs are there, but there's ZERO atmosphere. No-one dances in the big clubs on the strip (at gigs).

That said, LA is a good city but you NEED a car or lots of money for cabs. Absolutely nothing is walkable.

Check out the Stinking Rose on N. La Cienega Blvd for ALL garlic food (nom!).

The Getty Centre has a wicked art collection and a great restaurant with deluxe cocktails.

The strip is worth a walk but you need to be a fan really. The food in the Rainbow is supposedly pretty good (I have a friend who lives on Santa Monica Blvd (didn't know him when I went)).

If you got a car, there's a Six Flags theme park with a buttload of coasters a ways out north, and Disneyland in Anaheim. Universal Studios is chuffing awesome as well!

If you're going that way, dedicate as much time as you can to San Francisco. It's a marvellous place which I hope to return to early next year. It's warmer in the spring and autumn months (as we'd call them) and DO watch out for the fog if you're going out near the bay (GG Bridge, Alcatraz) as it can get very cold very quickly - trust me, I know from experience!

If you're driving up the coast highway, make a stop for half a day at Hearst Castle, near Monterey. Mountain View is also near there, which is the home of Google among others, and there's an amphitheatre there too, so check out for summer festivals and gigs.

Have a nice trip! :)

Yes - was looking forward to flying with Virgin in September to Chicago as I'd heard good things about the service, but our flight got pulled and we had to re-book elsewhere. :x

I've done Miami a few times and love the place

South beach is great, ft lauderdale is nice, up to cocoa beach etc

The best of the lot is the keys though, without a doubt one of the best places I've ever travelled to.

Get a convertible and its fantastic.

We did this trip last year, but left out LA end as we had been the year before. Carmel is lovely and you can take a whale watching trip out of there. We saw loads.
Also drive down the big Sur and stop off at the State and National Parks they are beautiful, one of them Julia Petifer Burns State park has a waterfall falling into the beach.

We also stayed at a town called Morro Bay where the hubbie went diving with seals in the kelps fields.
