well for a start i'm already with virgin and i'm getting a better deal than this ..
I just feel that presenting it as "effectively £2 for the first month" is misleading and inaccurate because it'll never happen.

what will never happen? the cashback?
for me, i went for it, i will keep it for a few months, hopefully get a retention deal like yours and my first month will effectively become £2 with the cashback is confirmed, it does bother me when it comes

The're giving you false information.
They supply micro sims for the intended purpose of use in the iPhone.
I am even using a BlackBerry Monthly Contract 'normal' VirginMobile sim in an iPhone with no problems.
No cashback is payable on monthly SIM-only contracts and PAYG offers.

My mate got the same yesterday but for £12 per month
Im on £7 per month, ult txt's, 1000 mins, 1GB Data...
yes I have it working on my 4S no problems. They even do micro sims now which they didnt offer a few months ago.
the cashback will happen - eventually, but months down the line. to claim that effectively reduces the cost of the first months payment is, quite frankly, bizarre.

You're overpaying :)
I've got the same package for £9 a month .. ring them back and tell them that you've got family members who have had the same deal you've had but have been offered this package for a lot less and ask if there's anything they can do. say that you feel the only reason your family members got offered the lower price was no more than luck of the draw because your circumstances were identical. i've always found that the trick is to not go in to the conversation as a negotiation because they'll get defensive and only offer you the minimum they can offer.
if you just approach it as if you're geninely looking to cancel for a better deal elsewhere, i've always found this gets better results.
...wait, I think I've figured it out:
Cashback valid on all sim only contracts of £12 and above
