This is a blinding deal.

The V+ box. £75. No monthly charge for people on the XL TV package, otherwise £5/month (definitely should upgrade to XL unless you are on the bottom (free) TV pacakge, because XL gives you free music movies and videos on demand, and free V+ subscription).

Information:
http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/dtv/vplus/index.html

It has three tuners (record two channels, watch a third).

HD output via HDMI. The HD content is BBC HD (no other linear channels), plus on demand movies, and other on demand HD content.

It's a PVR, so you can pause live TV.

7-day EPG (verus 1-day programme guide for your existing box)

You can record up to 80 hours of content, which is twice as much as Sky+.

Normal price is £150. £75 for a quality PVR AND HD box is a superb price (£329 + £10/month for SKY+ HD, which has better linear but inferior on-demand HD content)

For existing customers, I think new customers can get it, but only over the telephone, it's not on their website.

The ownership of the V+ box remains with Virgin, which means they are responsible for servicing for the lifetime of the box.

The HD content on Virgin is somewhat limited, but just as a PVR it's a good deal. HD ondemand content (mostly free) includes Lost, Greys Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Day Break, Brothers and Sisters, and a few dozen movies (at £4/each).

This is NOT on the Virgin website, but it definitely is a genuine deal that I have just ordered, and would advise you to call up now and ask for the £75 V+ special offer, because there is already a 10-day wait for installation, which will only get longer when they publicise this.

Just to add, to order call
150 from your Virgin phone, or
0845 454 1111 from a non-Virgin line.

XL TV is £20.50/month on its own, which is the top TV package (all Discovery Channels, etc.). But there are various packages available, e.g., broadband, XL TV and phone for £30/month.
- dudedude

Note: you are ineligible if you are on the 3 for £30 including XL TV (other 3 for £30 bundles are ok), if you are on the VIP deal, or 3 for £39 including free extra box.

I am looking forward to this (and been waiting a while too, I might add, was just waiting for them to drop the price, before I ordered, but was about to give in and pay full price to have it for Christmas, but am well chuffed at this price), it's worth the £75 just to be able to get some HD content so I can bore everyone that comes round showing them Planet Earth on my LCD TV.

Credit to 'cablemaster' on that site. I didn't have any problems, the Indian call centre worker put me on hold and confirmed the deal, but if you do then, tell them that the offer is

'in the customer service weekly brief called "download" it is in issue 41 (this week's) located on the Virgin Media intranet.'

I've just phoned up and have been advised that there are two options.
Option 1 £150 installation and no monthly charge.
Option 2 £75 installation and £10 a month,

shame I was hoping for £75 installation and no monthly charge.

If you don't have a V+ box this is an excellent deal, especially if you are on XL!

I have one, so called them regarding this deal. If you want it as a second box you can get it for the £75, but you still have to pay the £5 a month even if you are on XL.
#6
I have just arranged installation - £75, no monthly charge. I specifically asked her to confirm that there was no monthly charge, she said def not, as we are on xl tv. Thanks so much, I have been waiting for a price drop for ages! The person I spoke to (Scottish!) said that they had been told yesterday in their briefing that the price was coming down from today.
ps I had to pay the £75 upfront on cc, couldn't have it added to my bill

Hmm, don't think that's right. That was the old scheme, you had to pay a monthly charge of £10 (as well as £5/month which you pay if you are not on XL TV). But that is long out-of-date. Many of the staff don't seem to be aware of this, but worth directing them to the customer service briefing, and hopefully they will all get the message.

This is £75 and NO monthly charge on XL, £75 and £5/month on M or L TV.

I don't see it in the near future tbh. They have got some of the Sky1 stuff on VOD, and the VOD content (free on XL) generally really is superb, and far better than Sky1 - you have the full 4od, bbc od, etc., all free, and instant access.

You need one smartcard per box. Without a smartcard you only get the free-to-air channels (which is slightly worse than Freeview). So you need to pay a fee for the other box, which is £9.50/month.

Don't think this is likely especially as they have just started their own channel Virgin1 - not got anywhere near as good a channel line up but they're trying!
#18
What about all the cabling to the bedroom? Will they do this for you? Just to clarify - is the standard charge £9.50/month, but rosecaitlin has done a deal for £5?

After a day, two at most, you'll have watched all the HD content.

These are rubbish...imo. I sent mine back after about 5 days, clunky, awful to use, they've not got LOADS of channels that are on sky (not just Sky 1), they've got some screwed up pin-number system where you can't channel-flick the movies, no football first, no multi-start....

awful, truly awful.

Virgin cable broadband is awesome though.
#20
Can you record to a dvd recorder from the hdd on this box.

I have recently cancelled my Virgin Media package as fed up with them and am in the process of moving over to Sky for the best friend offer. Virgin phoned me 3 days after I told them to disconnect and offered me a V+ box for free with no monthly subscriptions and also reduced the price of my package to £48 (XL TV, XL Phone, 2MB Broadband and Sky Sports). I declined but this info may help someone else.
#22
I am on a discounted deal with VM for phone, tv, bb. When I ordered V+ today, I paid the £75 up front, I am assuming that it will not affect my existing deal. Did anyone check this when they ordered? I really don't want to lose my existing discounts.

cheers OP, signed up, nice one.

i would love cable but there is one small problem.
i live in the largest village in europe only miles from virgins head office at sheffield and we dont have any cable at all in the whole place???

obviously dont need the business then do we??
never mind freeview it is

I think your discription of Virgin cable broadband and my discription are at opposite ends of the dictionary.

With my 20mb connection, I'm currenlty downloading from newsgroups at the blistering rate of ..... 254kb/sec. :x (Should be 2.3mb/sec)

I've only downloaded a couple hundred mb, so way off the 3.5gb limit which would kick in the bandwidth management (between 4:30pm and midnight).

It's been like it for months - I fact, it's been so unpredictable since Virgin took over from Telewest. Previously I had 5+ years of full fat 24/7 goodness. Now it's like being on dialup.

I logged a call the other week and they confirmed I'd been having a poor service since early October - They said they'd sort it. 7+ days later and its worse.

Luckily I got my 25p/min support call refunded as they acknoledge that they have a problem. Not that they're doing much about it.

Virgin Broadband = :lazy:

My wife and I were going to buy this next week! Thanks for the information ordered today.
#28
I bought the V+ box for £100 about 2 months ago to cut my bill down my £10 a month. I currently pay £27 for V+ and 20mb broadband.

I hate the V+ box. Its hot & noisy. Even when its not recording anything and put into standby mode.. it has a mind of its own. Also there is no way to get into the EPG without pressing a sequence of 3 butttons lol! Thank god for macros on my universal remote. The EPG is rubbish too - its not real widescreen - it just stretches the 4:3 EPG when you choose widescreen mode. Also you cant go backwards in the EPG, so if you just missed a show you have to press lots of buttons to go forward a whole week to set up a series link, instead of going back 1 program block. Also sound seems to cut out every few secs on certain channels (Living). A clueless Virgin "engineer" came out to look at these problems but didnt have even 1 idea how to fix, other than to swap my box for another. This second box suffers all the same problems as the first, so I assume these problems are universal.

And while I'm moaning I'd just like to reiterate the points people have already raised in this thread about 20mb broadband service being rubbish. Ever since Virgin took over Telewest, their "(un)fair usage" policy has become a joke. after about an hour of not-quite-20mbit-speed it goes down to what seems like just over 4mbit.

I've just called them about this and I was told I would lose my discounts if I went for the £75 offer. If I wanted to keep the discounts I would have to pay £150

ouch :-( That must be so frustrating! They're are pretty good with my newsgroup speeds on 20mb.

As for V+ mine is so slow at changing channel bloody annoying.

If I subscribe to the Sky Sports channels through Virgin Media would I receive Sky Sports HD?

Oh dear! If they didn't actually tell me this when I ordered, hopefully I will be lucky......don't know whether to ring up and check, and potentially cancel the order, or let it go through and hope for the best :x :-(

Thanks for the Information, phoned up and ordered this afternoon. Had a quick chat with the sales assistant who confirmed the promotion just started today. If you are on XL TV package no additional rental cost for the box (the £75 includes installation and a HDMI cable).

My XL TV package is still at half price of £9.75month, give the retentions department a call and just mention the loss of Sky and they will give you a discount, whilst your their ask about further discounts on the Broadband and you should get this below £17 month for the 4Mb (I currently pay £10month 4MB)

Thanks Op Heat added

It was worth getting the box for the BBC sport in HD during the world cup and the awesome Galapagos and Planet Earth Programs in their full glory.

Thanks again to dudedude. My father-in-law got the £75 deal with no argument.

Just ordered it. Asked if it would affect the deal I negotiated a few months ago and he said "no". To be installed Wed 5th December in the afternoon.

Heat added .. many thanks.

Just ordered mine. Installed Dec 1st.
DOES NOT change my discounted rate.
If I want to move my old box upstairs I would need to pay £5p/m and £75 installation fee to move it.

My father has a V+ box and it doesn't suffer from the problems described earlier in this thread. Infact it is a great piece of kit.
