Ok guys here's the crack! And How to get it

GREAT IF YOU ARE LEAVING BT

Uswitch.com have an offer to take virginmedia broadband 100mb and phone for:

£30pm
Free installation
If you ring virgin activation is free too!

I called virgin and asked what they could do for 200mb (which is not on the uswitch site sneaky sneaky uswitch)

I was told the uswitch offer was:

£35 pm
Free installation
Free phone calls for 3 months
200mb broadband!!

Everything for just £35pm

Both the best and cheapest virgin media broadband and phone deals I can see.

Enjoy and remember to call virgin and quote uswitch deal ;-)

Good idea but I am afraid it is only via uswitch. Or phone VM direct and quote uswitch

Even with TCB or Quidco cash back the uswitch offer works out cheaper.

Just seen you can get 50mbs for £25 too. I'd go for that, I've got 200mbs but rarely get much above 50!

I would give it a try, log in to TCB and go through U Switch link that you have saved from previous session having cleared your cookies, worked for me 2 years ago and I got the cashback paid quickly. Maybe different now but if you're going to get a Uswitch deal anyway worth trying!

Is this cable or adsl. What happens to my phone line if it's cable? Is I disconnected. The reason I ask is I don't want to pay £120 to reconnect in 12 months when virgin double the price.

If anybody knows I'd be grateful to learn the answer

Looks to me like the 200mb is on the uswitch... at a lot more than £35... or am i missing something?

We have 150Mb and in devices which can cope with that its that and more all if the time, with multiple users, really depends on the utilisation in your area and the device you use.

We pay £23 retention deal, haven't paid full price in the 4 years we have been with them :)

for the average user no difference between 200mb or 50mb. currently have 200mb. not worth unless you're a download or gaming freak.

I got tv xl, 200mb and free phone weekends for £35

Yep you are missing something.
The part where I said:

The deal for 200mb is not on the uswitch site. You need to call virgin and quote uswitch 200mb and the advisor will add it for £35pm

Wrong...!
If you have 200mb you can pay £5 extra pm to lift the fair usage policy which will make it great for gaming.

50mb will download at 1mb/s
200mb will download at 2-5mb/s

I spoke with virgin this morning... they can do the 100mb for £30 but not offer anything better than £45 per month for the 200mb and £50 per month for the gamer 200mb... wouldnt budge.
Anyone else had luck with the 200mb offer quoted in this thread?

We have just lowered the 200mb. I think the most we have had is a steady 70 from it.

Looking at this as am getting fed up with BT price rises and the ridiculous amount of cash they've paid for Champions League football.

If I switch to Virgin without their TV service will I still be able to use the BT YouView box as a freeview box recorder connected to Virgin internet. Obviously without any subscription services etc?

Thanks

You should be ok with that yes. i have a bt youview box connected to sky broadband and it works fine as a standard recorder. plus you still get the catchup apps etc.

AVOID VIRGIN

I took out their Vivid so-called 100 Mbps Unlimited Fibre package, recently - speed tests (wired ethernet without any other downloads in background on a virus/spyware-free machine) revealed 20-30 Mbps on a daily basis, in the afternoons and evenings !!

Interestingly I get around 85 Mbps at 3.30 A.M. when nearly the whole country's fast asleep

Virgin are clearly deceiving and cheating their customers !

Avoid at all costs.

Horses for courses...
I made a huge post last year for ppl to switch to BT because my virgin internet kept dropping out. With a excellent deal to go with it.

I went to BT and look at me now I'm switching back to Virgin... Why?
Because BT has more dropouts than virgin did!

I really depends on your area. The worst thing is that there is no way to check if your area is oversubscribed before you sign up!

I had the same as you. Couldn't get the 200mb deal on the phone or on the chat. Using the chat though I did sign up to the 100mb deal and get £50 credit on my account. So not as good a deal but still better than just doing the uswitch on its own

what you talking about. I said unless you are downloading a lot or playing games. then not much difference from 50 to 200. in fact 50 felt much better esp when just Web browsing.

Wrong. I downloaded several games on XBL which lasted several hours without being caught by their "Fair usage" policy in the evening, in fact I never recall being limited ever. Sure if you download every day and dl stuff like movies and stream your games the FUP cap may be a better option. But for MOST people there is really no need for anything over 50 even.

Incorrect kiish it's not about "getting caught" it about upload and lag.
Upload is unrestricted with the gamer pack so online games will have less lag.
You won't notice but others will when your glitching on online games like COD

Prash_2k you are actually incorrect there. The unrestricted upload will not give you less lag. Lag would often be down to latency and you'll see this with ping tests. Just because you've gone from 12mb up to 20mb up OR you've gone from 6mb (you've uploaded too much on 12mb) to 20mb you will still have the same ping times. I get a faster ping on a 3mb BT line than I do on my 200mb virgin line. That's a 512k upload vs a 12meg upload. Obviously different servers will respond at a faster rate but the sheer upload speed bears no relevance to ping times so unless you are uploading lots of films or photos or something then you wont really be benefitting.

A side note is that if you've got lots of devices on your internal network and they're all fighting for the upstream traffic then the larger upload speed can help as your line wont be maxxed out. If you're in that situation you could just use prioritisation inside your own network to allow your traffic priority over others in your house.

The FUP is only for uploads anyway so when they sell it to "gamers" to let them get the latest updates quicker they're actually playing on peoples lack of understanding as the FUP wont ever apply to them getting their updates.

I have a hardcore gamer friend who uses his virgin media line for downloading updates and gaming during the day but when the evning kicks in he switches over to his BT Fiber line because the ping times are much better meaning he has less lag.

I've just accepted "base tv, free weekend calls, 300mb homeworks+" all for £45 a month.

The uswitch would have been 35 for 200mb + £14 for homeworks+ so instead of £49 its £45 a month.
I haven't really saved anything over what I could have got as a new customer but at least I've got them to agree to something.
