This looks like a good deal - i have internet radio and its amazing - far better than DAB (which is totally pants at my house!) Perfect reception for me, no crackle, hiss or squelch - also very few 'drop outs' in signal although i suppose this may depend on your set up - I have a Roberts one which i paid a lot more for than £39.99 !!!!

If this is a Bit Too Pink, the white equivalent of this has dropped from £49.97 to £44.99

http://logikir100.tripod.com/Vistron.htm has a load of information on this radio

Most of them are, certainly for less than £100

The Intempo GX-01 was £48.92 from Amazon a few days ago. It has a network socket. Its out of stock at that price now though.

You can either select them from lists with the dial on the radio, or use the www.reciva.com site from a computer and select your favourite stations from there.

Hot - I've got one (a cheapy from Currys a couple of years ago) and they are superb. The listen again capability on Radio 4 and 7 are worth the £40 alone.

Intriguing - can I have, for example, Radio 4's "The World Tonight" Listen Again as a preset? So I can listen to the 10pm news any time later that evening? :)

Reading the reviews, it's been £36 before so maybe it will drop in price again:thinking:

Overall, a great internet radio, particularly given the price at the time of purchase (36 pounds with free next day delivery). There is no competition at that price, particularly based on Reciva which seems the best internet radio provider.

However, that was from last July, when a pound was worth about a third more.

This is a graph of the exchange rate between the pound and the Chinese Remnabi over the last year http://fx.sauder.ubc.ca/cgi/fxplot?b=GBP&c=CNY&rd=365&fd=1&fm=1&fy=2008&ld=31&lm=12&ly=2009&y=daily&q=volume&f=png&a=lin&m=0&x=

If something is cheap to produce, then the price is based more on what people will pay, so if demand falls, then the price may fall too.

I've been looking for an internet radio for a few months. Before Christmas, you could get one of these in black, white or pink for £40, an Oxx Alto for £50 from play.com or a Binatone IR804 from Argos for £60. Currys & PC World had a few Logik IR100s for £40, and some Aldis had a Tevion for between £20 and £40.

The Tevion has some usability issues that are not easy to fix. The Logiks have a load of issues, but they can be fixed with a fair amount of fiddling. The Vistrons are fine, apart from the rather weedy speaker. The Oxx Alto also seemed fine, although it was from a small manufacturer, so ongoing support might not have been great. The Binatone also has DAB and FM tuners and has had some random build quality issues. The big problem is that its a Frontier Scientific radio, and at the moment, those don't let you pause, restart, FF or REW BBC Listen Again broadcasts. You have to start from the beginning.

Anyway, I waited until after Christmas. The Oxx Altos sold out. The Binatone increased from £60 to £90, the black Vistron sold out at Ebuyer, and the white one increased to £50.

In the end I was able to order an Intempo GX-01 from Amazon earlier this week. It hasn't been dispatched yet.

does this have alarm clock function?

Yes. It is also possible to adjust the brightness of the display when you have pressed a button, when it is playing but you haven't pressed buttons and in standby mode.

It is also possible to use the sharpfin firmware, if you don't mind voiding your warranty http://sharpfin.zevv.nl/ This lets you have 5 alarms, so you can have different alarms on weekends, weekdays etc.

The Sharpfin documentation says that it bleeps for 20-30 seconds and then plays a station that you have selected. If you are a deep sleeper, and the bleeping doesn't wake you, there is a risk that the network connection will fail, and you won't get the radio station. If you need to rely on the radio to wake you up, then you may be better with one that also has a DAB or FM tuner, which may be more reliable.

Why do these things only ever have a single mono speaker? Seems idiosyncratic, given the technology driving these things; internet, servers, TCP/IP, mp3 bitrates, wi-fi technology - all ultimately to generate mono sound !

this little box has a stereo headphone socket - you can output the sound to your hifi

There isn't much point in having two speakers unless they are far enough apart, and if you care about the sound quality, then the components cost a bit more. You can get internet radios which have detachable speakers, and others that have good quality stereo speakers. However, they are a smaller market, and so they end up being quite a lot more expensive (£100+ instead of less than £50).

well presets are for channels rather than programmes, but any listen again programme is always within five seconds (four or five button presses and a twist of the nob).
