I was talking to Voda about android handsets and was shown this: an alternative to the orange san fransisco at only £80 . Saw instore they sell for £80 INCLUDING a £10 freedom voucher.

(this voucher is allpied to many of the phones they had instore)
I saw this phone in the flesh: its slightly bigger than a x10 mini (sonyericson) so if you want a smaller android phone this is the 1 4 U !
This has to be the cheapest of the great android phones

on the voda site doesnt seem to want the usual £10 topup with the phone purchase,

This isnt for me but seems a great deal for someone needing a budget phone
Quidco.com cashback for voda is currently £5 off, so possible £75
Voda unlock thier phones officially for £19.99 or free if you're on voda contract

There are only a few reviews on the Vodafone site and someone pans this phone for it's battery life, or should I say, lack of it.

There is at least one custom ROM kicking around for this model of handset - I'll see if I can hunt down the link to it but from what I remember it speeds up the performance of the handset, as it ditches the Vodafone bundled software.

Edit - Here's the info on the custom ROM but also a few online reviews as well.

Edit 2 - According to the following forum thread it's possible to root the handset following a guide on Modaco (which is for the T-Mobile Pulse Mini) but there's also an alternative reseller to use for purchasing the unlock code from.

I saw this in the Vodafone shop the other day... Not impressed at all, looked bad compared to SF

Plus Orange Sf can be picked up for £78.99 inc top up PLUS unlocked for free, Very good OLED screen for SF and I'm very happy with it
#11
I'd go for the San Fran over this (in fact I did!)

Spec doesn't seem to list Wi-Fi. Anyone have this and can confirm if it does or doesn't have it?

I was pretty set on a San Francisco to replace my geriatric first-gen iPhone, but I'd consider this one at this price as well.

Resolution is worse than SF at 240x320 and a resistive touchscreen...

My wife had a htc desire hd and the battery life is about 10 hrs and that phone is a lot more than 80 quid

I bought a Orange SF last night for £99.10 inc £10 top up and Quidco tracked at £12 .
So it`s only costing me £78.10p for the SF phone .Bargain !

How does this compare to the new Samsung Eurpoa (and how does the SF compare to that?)

Soloney - do you mind me asking where you got the SF with quidco from?

Thanks

Theres nothing to compare the SF is brilliant for the money and is way easier to mod and because it has such a big following on XDA and Modaco there's bound to be 2.2 rom ar some point, I have a desire and bought one for the daughter and i have to confess i cant see why the Desire is £400 compared to the £79 SF as there's not £300 worth of difference, the screen is great battery is around the same and it doesn't feel cheap either if my desire broke tomorrow i would replace it with a SF till i got another premium handset that i liked.

Thanks for the reply Polly69. One more thing though; I keep hearing the SF referred to as £79. How? Isn't that the NHS staff discount?

Ditto. Please could someone answer this question.

I know i can go through quidco to get the price to under £80, but you can't really trust 'em 100% you see

That's pretty true. Have to say, after pooping my pants my battery would run out daily owning an iPhone, its such a relief to have an LG Optimus 7 lasts for 2 days easily.

Basically if you're an existing customer or you happen to know someone who is, ring up Orange and say just that and that you're looking to upgrade your phone, you should then be told about the £30 discount for existing customers if not enquire about it and if it doesn't work the first time just keep trying until it does. Took me about 5 tries but in the end I managed to get it for £78.99 including £10 credit and am very happy with my SF. Hope this helps.

battery life is always an issue with smartphones... but generally speaking that's because when people first buy them they turn on the wi-fi, bluetooth, gps and these ALL eat battery life - just try using the GPS with google maps and no power cord - watch the battery disappear!

However, turn all these off when you don't want them and you find that the battery power is really good. I'm speaking about the San Francisco here, and I have been really really impressed. Buy it, join the modaco forums (free) and wipe all the orange stuff off it - you'll end up with one seriously great phone for a silly price.

I'm not voting on this deal by the way... if it wasn't for the San Francisco I reckon this would be mega hot - but the SF has blown all other phones out the water at this price range. (the 800 x 640 pix screen is the mutt's I tell you!)

http://www.gsmarena.com/vodafone_845-3212.php

Only 128MB RAM, resistive touch screen (have to press the screen down for it to register inputs), only 240*320 resolution.

Doesn't say what the processor is, but it'll be the MSM7227 found in the San Francisco, HTC Legend, X10 Mini etc,

San Francisco has 512MB RAM, capacitive touch screen with multitouch and an OLED display at 800*480 resolution.

Although £80 < £100.

just saw ghost's comment and redacted mine.
Basically, I'd pay £20 more for an extra 384mb ram, capacitive screen and more than 4 times the screen res.

I'd say this is worse than both.

SF is fantastic for the money, especially the 512MB RAM and 3.5" WVGA screen downsides to that phone is it's poor build quality.

Samsung i5500 is quite nice if you dont mind the small screen (it;s capacitive which is a bonus), comes with Swype pre-installed so typing on a small screen isnt that hard. It on has 256MB RAM but that's more than enough really.

It now seems that there is a mini price war at the cheaper end of the smart phone market, this can only be good for us consumers.

I too have an Orange SF and highly recommend this phone, just be aware that there is a complete lack of genuine accessories and spares, although I guess that this may be addressed in the coming months if it becomes very popular.

Voted hot.

Well if a poor man wants to get it then no harm. Plenty of us out there!

We can get the san fransico at £79.99 so how would this be better with a far worse screen resolution, plus you can unlock that zte for under £1.79 or for free. nckcodes.co.uk

I have a Desire and i've used a San Fran.

The San Fran IS a 'proper smartphone', other than HD video and decent video playback it does pretty much everything mine can for a lot less money.

Screen res on this alone is enough reason not to buy it. You will just be frustrated every time you can't download an app because of it.
