BT Shop has this BUDGET VOIP HANDSET for just £5.99 inc FREE delivery.

Edit: use attached voucher (code: BTBBSAVE) to get this for £5.09 delivered.

Handset for calls with BT Communicator. Plug in your speakers and listen to audio from your PC when not making calls. Switches to handset mode when lifted from cradle. Plugs into the ear and mic sockets on your PC sound card.

Note: The description says that this handset is for BT Communicator but I think this can be used with any VOIP program. Correct me if I'm wrong...

As this is not a USB phone, it uses the speaker and mic jack plugs on your sound card, I don't think this will work in a very integrated way with software like Skype. So be careful that this phone is what you want.

As long as you plug it in correctly, it'll work.

Thanks leepa :)

If a headset works in your PC, this WILL work too ;-)

You mention Tesco comes with £5 credit - I was under the impression that internet call such as Skype were free? but I dont know much about it.

Most VoIP (Internet calls) are free when you make call between two parties using the same service. Some even allow free inter-service calls. However, normally, calling from VoIP to landline (BT line) cost money.
Some providers (voipcheap, for example) offer free landline UK calls, not just PC-PC calls.

And I still think that all those "VoIP" USB or soundcard "phones" not worth even 1p. :) Do it properly and make VoIP calls from your normal phone, without PC :)

Kommunist - how do you make VoIP calls on a normal phone

You need ATA device and broadband connection. Basically, you need to plug ATA to your router (or buy VoIP router if you don't have router at all). If your ATA has both FXS and FXO ports (some call it telco passthrough or Teleport), then you connecting ATA to BT or NTL line. Then you plugging your normal phone to ATA.

Some configuration also required for ATA so that it could know what provider to use and how.

So, if you have passthrough then you can receive (and make) calls via your normal landline and your VoIP using the same phone. If you don't then you need separate phone for VoIP.
I recommend Zoom V3 as VoIP router or Zoom 5805 as ATA.

Note that this won't work on Skype as they are using proprietary protocol and not SIP. But there are many other providers that much cheaper than Skype, so it is not big deal.

Funny thing is that someone reported my previous posting as bad :D Not that I am offended but it would be good to know why :)

The actual phone isn't that great - I have 2.. quality is poor.

Agreed with Kommunist, you surely won't go for skype/usb phones when you've tried using your normal phone connected to ATA & SIP server. I'm on voipstunt & sipgate and I have Linksys SPA3000 (previously using Linksys PAP2). Crystal clear calling local/national and even overseas too and I do not need to sit infront of my PC to make a call :)
