A Core 2 Duo or 2 Core AMD would be nice for many people the HD2400 graphics is a far better compromise. And compared to the OK plastic case of the Vostro 1000 the Vostro 1500 uses magnesium alloy.
It is a Core Architecture CPU(as is the Core 2 Duo) which means it is faster than a Centrino Pentium M 1800!!!!! Many applications only use one Core so often this Celeron will beat a Core 2 Duo1.6. For this very reason a Core 2 1.4 upgrade is too overpriced to recommend at all as of todays Vostro offer.
For those on a lesser budget!!!!!!!!!! (added later)
Select £199 model (ONLY HAS VISTA BASIC,no truelife but you can choose Windows XP , 1GB RAM, no Web cam bulit in).Customise
Select Base 1 year warranty,add 8400 graphics (£60 discount),Add USB Optical Mouse (£5)

which is a centrino or a celeron make up your mind so i can decide "deal or no deal"

Bargain with a laptop with direct x 10 (NEXT GEN) Graphics card
#3
And theres me still waiting for confirmation of my Vostro 1000. Should I go for this instead? What are the pros and cons?
#4
1000 is plasticy but with dual core fast for general use. 1000 will also have better battery life. And as has been pointed out by the Villa fan this only has an 80GB hard drive compared to the 120GB of the 1000

Vostro 1500 has a far superior chassis, will play downloaded HD material with ease and can double up as an adequate games laptop. Plus a decent web cam too. The Truelife scren is also an upgrade (make sure you select this to get pre discount price to £299+)
(adequate is the word. Vostro 1000 in same manner will be totally inadequate).

Think this has up to a 2 week delay but if so is still worth the wait.

If you think it is decent please vote HOT. A few Vostro 1000 orders may need changing. Mainly for occasonal gamers and HD viewers.

Hmmm now I have a dilema...I was going to order the Vostro 1000 this afternoon...is this now a better deal??
#6
cant find it... any direct links??
#7
would this run that Crysis game?
banned#8
oh chuff, no xp :-(
#9
It is a base level 'gamers' graphics card so will only be adequate.

But without an 'added card' it I doubt any Core 2 Do laptop would compete any where near with this laptop. At least with regards to 95% of games.
#10
80gb hard drive. 1000 has 120gb
#11
for XP take off the Truelife and swap for XP Pro. Adds £18 to the final price. (Or £35 if Truelife too)
banned#12
didint want xp pro :-( will thsi play games like the sims2, etc, etc only sort of games daughter plays, i have been waiting to buy for over a year and then every time i see one another one appears and i dont want to lose out so always end up not bying either - lol

my 1st posting.

Figured I had better share it as have benefited from this site quite a few times.
#15
For day to day use (Word, Internet, Emails etc..maybe odd DVD)...would the 1000 or 1500 be better? Is this a superior spec? Thanks.
#16
really depends.

This has superior looks.
Dual Core 1000 will be better on battery compared to the one I have specced, has bigger drive too.
However this will play High Definition Video with ease, has web cam and is games capable.
Google images them and weight up your uses/future uses.

The graphics card in a sub £300 laptop is pretty much a 'first ever.

Like all current Vostros there is no DVI or HDMI so offical Blue-Ray disks etc will not output to a TV, even via the d-sub VGA port.
banned#17
what connections does this have. Wanna watch hd on my tv not on a laptop. Would this handle a bluray drive.

Here's a direct link to home user site HERE

Reduce warranty and add truelife & graphics card and go all the way to checkout for final price

E value code is 305 N0215002 from home user site to get the 5% quidco too!!

to go through home user site means you get benefit of distance regs for sending it back up to 7 days after purchase (not available when bought through business site)

One thing you should be aware of is that the chassis and build quality of the Vostro 1000 is entirely different to the Vostro 1400 and Vostro 1500. The Vostro 1400 and 1500 have magnesium in their case body, which makes them much sturdier. If you need a laptop to last you 3 – 4 years, the Vostro 1400/1500 are the way to go. They also look nicer because they have a bit of a curved finish, media buttons, LED accent lighting and you can see a metallic finish that’s more professional looking.

So overall is this a better deal than the Vostro 1000?

I've just bought bought a Vostro 1000 and a gaming laptop would have been a nice bonus.:|

8400 Nvidia card is OK. I can run GOW, UT3 and COD4 but not at the screen's native resolution of 1440x960 (mine is a 14'1" widescreen HP), you have to dumb the detail settings down a bit, but they run.

If you play lots of Source games, you'll be laughing as this card eats CS, TF2 and HL for breakfast.

PS Also worth nothing that those Vostros come in TOP HEAVY, they are more suitable as desktop replacements as opposed to 'portable' computers.

hot deal.

However, i believe that you are really only buying for the aesthetics by sacrificing processor spec and hard disk space.

A sub £300 pound laptop can't really be considered a gaming machine. What games can you really play on this? Games which are several years old most likely. The processor really isn't up to scratch. Celeron is yesterday's technology.

For everyday use, both are probably just as good. But you will get more longevity out of the Vostro 1000 due to it's better processor. You don't need a highspec machine to play high def! I output HiDef divx to a 42" telly with a Sempron 1.8Ghz 1 Gig RAM!!

Hot nonetheless. Choices eh? ... Don't you just love em.

Read the post above for some examples...

Pretty much most games will play on this, granted not at full detail but then thats why every game has options to turn the detail levels down eh.

I'm *really* tempted to invest despite having a decent laptop (with a rubbishy built in intel graphics chipset)

Go to quidco, log in , click link to dell site, make sure it says: "You are here: United Kingdom >HOME", click purchase help tab, shop by evalue code, enter 305 in first box and N0215002 in second box, search and bobs your uncle:thumbsup:

My order for the 1000 has been cancelled for some reason, card failed. Must have made a typo on the address. Might be a stroke of luck as this may be a better deal. Looks much better and can get it with the Wi-Fi N version card installed instead of the trulife screen (which has mnay bad reports online) for £292 delivered.

Or should we all wait for new offers tomorrow when the 1000 one expires??
#35
This looks like a decent option if you want to play games although most modern games will really chug along even on low settings on this machine, especially if you are running resource hungry Vista..... Definately go for the 2gb.

1gb on this machine will be really really poor for running vista, games or otherwise you need a minimum of 2gb for vista really....

Visually It definately looks better than the 1000 but neither are lookers when you look at machines from hp etc...I guess its down to what you are going to use it for, improved looks and game play ability vs better battery life, overall performance and storage on the 1000. Both incredibly cheap for what you are getting have some heat !

I cant see anyone using on of these for hd playback with the complete lack of outputs both audio and video....
#36
there is possibly a 2 week wait here.
Personally I would order and assume(hope) that you could cancel if the urge takes you for Thursdays new offers.
Reread my amended posting so you get the deal to suit.
Laptops have an easy access hatch for future RAM upgrades (About £12 per GB at the moment)

hi all,
i'm a mac user and would like a laptop for around the home, caravan trips etc... a spare basically with a different operating system. i was looking at purchasing the dell vostro 1000 this afternoon and now i've come upon this deal so now i'm extremely confused :?

so which is the better laptop?

i'm also not too sure about the security of it, viruses etc... and it gives you a option if you want a security package? does it have virus protection as standard?
apologies for my ignorance but i've been using a mac for years and last time i used a pc was about 10 years ago and i can remember getting loads of viruses

thanks
#38
Arent these no specifc mobile processors really power hungry....The whole point of laptops is that they are portable. Limited battery life is a major downside...
#39
Not a bad price but celeron, yuck.
banned#40
getting that graphics card with a 'celeron' completley defeats the purpose, a Celeron is one of the most useless processor out there second only to a VIA intergrated processor, this will not run games well at all even if it does have the graphics, the processor lacks too bad.

Celerons were designed to be 'Budget' processors and were designed for people who do not use games and simpyl browse internet and use applications like word e.t.c, they were never designed to be used in any form of gaming computer.

Yours is an HP, so it will actually be a sensible build with a GOOD processor and a GOOD amount of Ram, this piece of junk will not manage anywhere near that, this is like for example a couple years ago, buying a crummy 700mhz pc and throwing in a top of the line graphics card and hoping to play the best game available, its just not going to happen. People are forgetting processor and ram are big factors too you cant just scrap them stick in good graphics and call it a gaming machine no way in hell
