It's worth noting that most of Dell offers are due for an update on Thursday so you might be better off waiting. Voted hot nonetheless though coz it's a damn good price for the spec.
#2
This is hugely hot... latest processor, huge HDD, 3GB RAM, and what normally costs loads, a decent graphics card. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a misprice; if you want a new laptop that will play games very well, don't wait.

I'd probably upgrade the battery for £11.75 (though it does stick out at the back).

Looks like a missprice to me

Wow this looks very impressive... probably fast enough to run Vista nicely too. Not sure whether I'd go XP or Vista though...
#5
Its not a misprice, it's been like this for the past week.

vista will fly on it

It looks like a pretty good price for a decent spec laptop.

Stupid question: are there any restrictions or gotchas in buying from Dell Business?
#8
this is not misprice . i order one of these in the morning as it cost me a little bit more as i ordered with some different specs
ordered lcd wxga+ 1440*900
bluetooth
9 cell battery
i was charged £580 but i am still happy
buy it before midnight tomorrow before they (dell ) change their mind on Thursday as they launch new offers every thursday . don't worry about quidco or any further discount. just hurry up that s my simple advice to you .
#9
Tempted....
#10
Does the 9 cell battery actually stick out on this one? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that it doesn't even though that is what it says on the website.
#11
voted hot. :-)
#12
one of dell sales guy told me that 9 cell battery is wee bit bulky and comes out of proportion.
but i personally think that 9 cell battery is far better than 6 cell battery as you can use you laptop more freely for longer time without searching for an electric outlet all the time. and you can really enjoy laptop when you are traveling

Hi this is my first post so hello everyone:-D

How good is the T8300 processor do you think?

This deal seems like a good price to me as there is a Sony Vaio on Amazon with the same processor and they want £1442.03 for it.
#14
Just done some searching and it looks as though the T8300 is very very nice. Very powerful and uses less power than similar processors. This looks like a real desktop replacement for most people. Also the graphics card is good - it is powerful enough to play a lot of today's games on medium settings and most old games maxed out.

It's not going to compete with high end desktop machines but it's not bad for the money. Sooo tempted... aargh

Thank-you for the information. :)

I'm also wondering this.

The new 45nm Core 2 Duo mobile CPUs (T8xxx series) are priced significantly lower than the previous generation which is one reason why this seems cheaper than it actually is.

The T8300 is £47 cheaper than the older T7700 but both run at 2.4GHz.
[mod]#22
Yes this is a nice deal, I have a Vostro 1500 here and like it a lot.

Be aware that although Dell update the deals fortnightly now, the free delivery offer amongst a lot of others expires this Thursday. Now they may just extend them again or not.....

Anyone can buy from small business but you should only use your own name when asked for a business name and when asked say its for Home use, that way your buying as a consumer and your dsr should be intact still.

The 9 cell battery does indeed stick out the back but will give you up to 4hrs use the 6 cell around 2hr 45mins both with frugal use of screen brightness etc.

I have recently seen the DVD of the making of 'The Pirates of the Carribean' 2006.
Any one who has seen this film with the character 'Davy Jones' and the Cracken will be absolutely amazed by the featured graphics, whatsmore, they used DELL laptops and desktop computers to create the computer genearated graphics!
Didn't get a shot of the model type though.. I was gobsmacked :w00t:
Anyone that doubts the capabilities (albeit it probably top end machines) just watch the film Dead man Chest ! brill

SAME WATTS AS Merom Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4GHZ.
What went wrong?

LESS CACHE (2MB versus 3MB !!!!) SO SLOWER

good value though EVEN THOUGH IT HAS NO HDMI OR DVI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This laptop was debatably better value with the the 8600M GT graphics and a Core architecture Core CPU at £330.
#26
I purchased this machine although opted for Vista Premium and was given a travel remote (?) for no extra cost.
#27
Worth considering that the 8600GT is ddr2 varient, and pretty slow, a great laptop, but you are not going to be playing any new games on it at a reasonable detail.

I don't. I just looked at "expires" dates on the promotions page - http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/promo.aspx/promocompare?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&l=en&s=bsd&~ck=anavml&~tab=2&~subnav=vostronb

I know what it is. I just thought the batteries would be the same between the two models; perhaps not. :?

It definitely does stick out on the 1500.

The T8300 consumes less power than the T7700 although Intel maintains the TDP at the same value for the new range of chips.
People often misunderstand what TDP is; it’s a figure that indicates to manufacturers the maximum amount of heat dissipated by a RANGE of CPUs so that they can design a chassis that can adequately cool ALL the chips in the range.
So rather than reduce the TDP for the new chips Intel increases the maximum clock speed that can fit within the same TDP, so you get more performance for the same amount of power in the same chassis.

LadyEleanor
LESS CACHE (2MB versus 3MB !!!!) SO SLOWER.

It’s actually 3MB versus 4MB and the difference in performance is usually negligible.
The T8300 is nearly £50 cheaper anyway so it’s much better value. For the price of the T7700 you can buy a T9300 which is 2.5GHz 6MB cache. Personally I’d rather save the money and go with the T8300. An extra 100MHz and 3MB cache offers little extra performance for nearly £50. Don't be seduced by large caches, as long as you have 2MB it will be fine.

I have a nokia phone with a battery. IT DOES NOT STICK OUT either.

Don't see the relevance but if people are going to post pointless comments...

Hot deal.

I'm not too sure that 3mb over 4mb cache doesn't make a real life difference though.

How do you do that?

It only gives the choice of Vista Business, Ultimate or XP Pro.

Thanks

Could existing owners of Vostro 1500 machines install a T8300 CPU at a later date? I ask because I bought a Vostro 1500 when it was £316 a few weeks back with the hope that I could upgrade the CPU at a later date as prices fall. I know the machine can currently accept up to 2.4GHz dual core CPU, but just wondered whether it would recognise the new architecture of this chip?

Tricky question, the vostro 1500 has 2 different motherboards fitted, one has onboard graphics and the other takes the 2 graphics options offered but as both are able to be spec'd with cpu's from Celeron M540 upwards I would have to suggest that the CPU ziff socket has to be compliant with all T7*** series cpu's and should also be ok for T8*** series too.
There have been several sockets in use 478, 479 and P and although some have the same number of pins the placement is different.
It would make sense for dell to go with a socket that allows them flexibility of cpu so I'm going with yes you should be able to swop about, there has been a bios update available for some weeks so I guess thats for the new cpu's to be recognised too.

I have a Vostro 1500 here with M540 that I intend to fit a T7200 into soon so I will let you know ;-)

I ordered it over the phone. I wanted to change the OS to Premium as I wanted to have Media centre but the option wasn't listed via the site. I called them using a number from saynoto0870 and asked if they could change it for me. They said yes, so I asked for a travel remote. They said yes again. I should have kept on asking.

Being delivered on 22nd I think.

Hi,

Ah, ok - thanks.

I wonder if they can change it once the order has been placed!

I'm not too sure that 3mb over 4mb cache doesn't make a real life difference though.

If you look at the benchmarks the difference between 2 and 4MB is usually negligible so the difference between 3 and 4MB will be even less.

Certain games benefit from 4MB caches but in a laptop like this which apparently uses very slow video memory the bottleneck is very much the GPU so the CPU performance is not the issue.
